Introduction: Elle, E-Waste Jewelry

This is a personal project inspired by all every day electronic devices and the speed with which they are discarded nowadays.
Since I live in USA, I am surprised by how quickly multiple objects are considered garbage and you can easily find them on the streets every day. I have collected objects many times to reuse them in projects or for personal use. This is because they are generally discarded for a better, a nicer or a newer one, and not because its useful life is over.

As a graduate student of a program related with technology and design, particularly electronic waste called my attention, and all those pieces that I can easily find here in contrast to Chile. I started this project trying to find a new use for these items, rescuing and transforming many of them into an object that can be used in our daily life with a new meaning.

Step 1:

The first step is to select a bunch of wires with the colors we like, not so thick, I used wires with 3mm (1/8 in) diameter as maximum, the length of these wires is about 20cm (8 in).

Then pick a thicker and longer cable that will structure the whole necklace. For this, I used one about 5mm (1/4 in) diameter and I attached the extremes of the colored wires in two parts with electrical tape. You can join all the wires in the half and then tape them in the extremes of the shortest wires.

Having done that, we can measure the length we want for the necklace and cut the same length in each side to get a symmetry. The length of this necklace is 74cm (29 in).

Step 2:

Next step is to solder electronic connectors to the edges that are going to be the clasp of the necklace. The important thing is to use male and female plugs. I am using RCA connectors I found on the scrap.

After this, we will cover the main cable with coiled phone cable, it can be normal or coiled. For this, I am taping along the main cable one extreme of the phone cable before start rolling it, to make the main cable thicker and to secure the phone cable on itself. Then I roll the phone cable as tight as I can, starting from the side of the joint with the colored wires. When I finish covering the main cable, I insert the edge and about 2 or 3cm (1 in) of the phone cable inside the spiral I made with it, to hide the edge and make the finishing.

After repeating the same in the other side of the main wire we are done!
The necklace should look like the final picture.
