Introduction: Frida Kahlo Costume

About: Hi! I'm a slightly feral mountain hermit that likes to be helpful. I do community management at Instructables & Tinkercad. 🙌 Want to hear me chat about making? Search "CLAMP Podcast" on YouTube or your favorit…

Frida Kahlo is a super easy last minute costume - perfect for Halloween or anytime really. :D She's one of my favorite artists, so I just had to do a Frida Kahlo costume for Halloween!

All you really need is some makeup, fake flowers and a good large scarf or shawl. But I'll break it down to show you how I did I created my Frida Kahlo costume!

There are more photos on the last step, and Audrey should be hooking me up with an amazing Frida Kahlo and her animals friends portrait of the costume, too!

Step 1: What You'll Need:

  • large earrings
  • large necklace
  • a scarf/shawl
  • dress or top with a large rounded neckline
  • a long colorful skirt
  • fake flowers in colors to match your clothes
  • bobby pins and ponytail holders
  • blush, mascara, an eye pencil (that matches your brows) and lipstick
Have a look at some of her self portraits or of pictures of her to get an idea of the look you're going for.

You should probably also memorize some Frida Kahlo facts. Check out the Frida Kahlo wikipedia page for those.

Step 2: Prepping Your Hair

It's best to do this costume with unwashed hair. It'll hold better. :D

Part your hair down the middle and secure it into two low pigtails. If you've got bangs like I do, part them and pin them back securely first!

If you have really thin hair like me, it wouldn't hurt to tease the pigtails just a bit to add volume.

Step 3: Cross the Braids on the Top of Your Head

Pull the left pigtail up over the top of your head to the right side. You can take the elastic off the braid now and pin it in place with bobby pins. Then take the right braid and carry it over the top of your head and to the left. Take off the hair elastic and pin it into place. Try to tuck the ends in as much as possible. :)

You can secure the bottom of the braids to your head with bobby pins if you like, but because my hair is so fine I let them hang out where they were.

Step 4: Add Accessories!

I forgot my necklace for the photo, but you know. Time to pin flowers in your hair, and put on earrings and a necklace. The bigger the better. Gold tone earrings work best, but I'm using old feather ones I had around my house.

Step 5: Blush and Lipstick

Not too much - you just want to add a little color to your face. I used red lipstick and a pinky/peachy blush.

I added blush only to the apples of my cheeks.

Step 6: Fill in Your Eyebrows

You want to make them pretty dark. Lightly run the eye pencil through them, using a paper towel to help smudge it. I also "outlined" my brows, by drawing lightly on the inside border of the hair. I filled in any gaps in my brows and tried to make them a little bigger. :)

The first photo is a before and after, so you can see the difference this makes.

Step 7: Add a Faint Moustache

For this, you'll use mascara. Wipe off the excess mascara onto a paper towel and hold the brush horizontally. Lightly sweep this above your lip in an up and down motion until you've got a little color there. Then blend it with your fingers. If it's too dark, you can cover it with a little powder foundation to help blend it out.

(i am so excited about having a moustache)

Step 8: Adding a Unibrow

You'll be doing this the same way you did the moustache, but darker. Dip the brush into the mascara and clean off the excess. Hold it horizontally and apply it between your brows. Try to avoid hitting your brows with the wand because you'll get lots of clumps.

You can use a paper towel to blend this as needed.

I applied a little powder foundation over this to make it a little less dark. :)

(I tried doing the unibrow with the eye pencil, but it was too hard. It's tricky to keep it sharp enough because you want the lines nice and thin!)

Step 9: Now Go Out and Look Serious.

And make sure to school everyone that doesn't know who you are. :D
