also, would there be any way of amplifying the signal?

get a larger antennae. to get a stronger signal, the start of the antennae gets hooked up to a power source, ground to negative of power source. i think that it will work.

No power supply needed. This is a classic crystal radio that is powered by the received radio signal itself. The downside of this is that the signal strength is proportional to the length of the antenna you attach to it, so you need a long antenna to get enough power to hear the signal.

back in the earlier days of radio, many used a dual coil set up. I used to have the design. I think it is in storage. The main coil acted like a primary transfomer coil to increase the amplitude in the secondary coil.

What "magnet"? This is a clasiic crystal radio design for the am broadcast band. There is no magnet associated with this project. You also will need a capacitor in parallel with that resistor for the earphones you get these days. A little more research on the author's part would have made it more useful. Good luck!

What is the 47k resistor for? That is, if these are actually your instructions. It looks a wgole lot like you copied some diagrams from the net...

The 47k Resistor is to create a dc path from the diode to ground because the ceramic earphone needs a little bit of help doing this.
