That's a lot of work just to split a tiny 2x2. This might be ok in an emergency, but unless I'm surviving an end of the world scenario then I'll just spend forty bucks for real axe. And I don't think I should have to tell you how unsafe that was. Hands way form the business end of any sharp object is the general rule.

stephenniall in reply to sharlstonFeb 13, 2010. 9:38 AM
Ahh was just going to ask you what it was made out of !

Im going to make one out of a 2-4 Piece of wood and possible Lathe the bit which i hold into a circle !! .

ill post pictures
sharlston (author) in reply to stephenniallFeb 13, 2010. 12:09 PM
i dont like axes with a turned round handle i tend to like oval with lots of varninsh on

im looking forward to the pictures
stephenniall in reply to sharlstonFeb 13, 2010. 12:19 PM
I might try one like that and stain it with coffee.

Where did you get your Steel ??

Im thinking of buying off the interweb!
sharlston (author) in reply to stephenniallFeb 13, 2010. 1:45 PM
i dont know i had it lying around id rather use commercial staner but i like the natural colour best anyway
stephenniall in reply to sharlstonFeb 13, 2010. 1:53 PM
Ill have a look on ebay !

I suppose ill have to stain it though because i wont be using special wood Ill just use a piece of cheap 2 X 4
sharlston (author) in reply to stephenniallFeb 13, 2010. 1:55 PM
i dont see any reason why you cant just sand the wood then varnish it
stephenniall in reply to sharlstonFeb 13, 2010. 2:02 PM
thats what i am going to do  I shall keep it a square body for my first attempt to test how good my metal is . Then on my second attempt i might Lathe down the wood and Either varnish it or stain it with coffee
sharlston (author) in reply to stephenniallFeb 13, 2010. 2:05 PM
hope it all goes well if you need any help dont hesitate to ask and please post pictures what sort of metal are you using? i find alumium not as good as the glavanised steel i used
stephenniall in reply to sharlstonFeb 13, 2010. 2:24 PM
Well i have some aluminium Spare i also have a piece of steel . Ill have to get the Wire brush Grinder attachment  out to get rid of rust . Ill have a look in my local shops for Galvanized Steel though
