homemade wooden bokken

 by One.
hey guys, this is the wooden bokken (Japanese training sword) that I made. as you can see, the blade is not as curved as an ordinary bokken, but the almost straitness feels better in my hands. It took around about an hour to make, plus overnight glue-drying time for the guard. the overall sword consists of two pieces (blade and guard), and the tools I used were: a jig-saw, a belt sander, heavy duty sandpaper, overnight wood glue, and a drill with a half-inch spade bit. Oh, and I forgot to mention that I used a plane too.

it's about four feet long. also, by plane I meant a wood plane. I used it to shape the edges of the bokken.

Which size(s) did you use? Most people only have the regular palm planes, but for something like this, a finger plane would be very useful for the step right before sanding. (I happen to have a collection of planes, including a 3' long monster, and one smaller than my thumb, along with nearly every size in between) Also, what did you use to hold the sword while you worked it?

Finger planes would be very useful, yes. I can't remember the plane size I used but it was rather large, probably too large, in fact!
While I was working on it it was secured in the vice (With plastic teeth covers installed to avoid marking the wood)

Ahh OK. my biggest sword is my Buster Sword a.k.a. the worst buster sword ever made. I mean its bulky the blade bends at the bottom etc. : ( out of all my swords my most stable sword is one ii bought at Comic Con New York last year. this guy wuz selling homemade swords. i think its a pipe with sponges on it then silver tape for the blade and black for the handle
