Don't install Ubuntu, and don't dual boot with it, it will make your other os unusable.

You arn't friends with computers yet I see! When my computer boots, I can choose between Windows XP, Windows Vista, Ubuntu, or openSuse! All four of my operating systems are fully functional!

Sorry to be harsh, I just don't like it when people who don't know what they are talking about instruct other people...

I don't think I like ubuntu, it's too user friendly.... very non-GNU/Linux.

-and the fact now people think "Linux"="Ubuntu" xD (that's referring to Linux as GNU/Linux btw) ;-)

Good Instructable though.... when I found out about Linux it was by pulling up the bootstraps. =)

Ubuntu is good for people who have little to no experience of the linux environment. When you want to start compiling custom kernels and other stuff, then you can move onto things like fedora and debian.

Its good but a few minor details: restricted drivers are still free - i use a few. restricted drivers just means that it is not a driver that is 100% guaranteed to work with ubuntu. you also forgot to mention that linux is spyware and virus proof. dchall8: it is an operating system- you can get a virtual machine so that you can have a mac, windows, solaris or even another linux on the same install. as for programs - search in google - most of them are free

Your Cd will have a copy of wubi in the main directory , just run it from windows. Its just like installing a windows program, and its easy enough to not really even need explaining how to do.

Yes, Just Download Wubi at Wubi.com, what it does is creates ubuntu on the same partition as windows. And if you don't like it you can just delete it like normal from where you normally delete programs in windows, I have ubuntu on mine and it works just fine.

Hey, I was wondering how do you do those cool 3d cube and other effects? And yeah... ubuntu is a pain in the *ss to get to work. I can't get my sound or my wi-fi to work.

Neva mind... I read all of your instructable now... but I can't get desktop effects to work... I forgot wat it says... but I know it didn't let me b4. I have a Diamond Radeon X1650pro ATI crossfire card. I also have a crossfire board, but I don't know if it is actually using the crossfire technology all together (uses the card and the on board graphics simutaneously and effeciently).

You also don't mention what ubunto is. Is it an OS shell that allows you to run other operating systems? Is it a complete OS by itself? Does it have a GUI or command line? Where do I go to find out what it is and what software works on it?

And if, like me, you've fritzed your CD/DVD burner, Ubuntu from USB stickthis is a good place to go looking for solace.
Jan 27, 2008. 6:03 AMgmjhowe says:
this is good, but it requires more depth, for example, explaining the different iso u can download. Also maybe a link to an iso burner. Also you definatly need more info on the partioning section, as this is the hardest bit, and u dont even mention what a swap file is.
