How to jailbreak (untethered) 3.0 and 2.2.1

scienceboy63 has a great Instructable on how to go from a tethered jailbreak to an untethered without restoring. click me go straight to step four, because the first 3 steps are already on my instructable. (im guessing he didn't search before making it) except, I think the link to download the tethered to untethered is on step 1 or 2.

I added, as a green twist, a way to properly dispose of a dead, bricked, broken, or otherwise non-working ipod touch or iphone. The complete details are in the last step. Please, when you move on to something other than your ipod, please don't just throw it in the trash. You need to make sure it gets to the big apple recycling store in the sky, instead of spending years in a landfill rotting and slowly being consumed by tiny land critters, all of whom will die after ingesting a capacitor or drinking lcd ink. Please help save the planet!!

For Firmware 3.0/2.21 which are currently the two latest iPod firmwares. if apple comes out with a later firmware do not do this, wait for me to come out with an update.

This is your Instructable if you got a SECOND GENERATION ipod touch thinking you would be able to jailbreak it, and were horribly disappointed when you tried and bricked your ipod and had to restore (like me lol) this is an untethered jailbreak, which means it can reboot WITHOUT having you hook it back up to your computer. I will probably not be using real pictures since I just finished setting back up all of my jailbroken and non apps and I don't feel like having to do it all again, but I WILL go through the trouble of using gimp to make it look like they are real lol.

Step 1: OS 3.0 Jailbreak

This release of redsn0w also works with the iPhone 3G, the iPhone 2G, and the first ipod touch.
But you obviously need the correct firmware for the device you are using.

Okay guys, you wanted it, now you got it. For free.

Supplies list:
1. A 3.0 ipsw update file: We can not give it to you because of legal issues. You either have to download it from iTunes or find it somewhere else (not recommended)
2. The 3.0 version of Redsn0w. Also, to your desktop. put the apple update in the redsn0w folder.

This is for ipod touch 2G.

What you need to do.
1.Update Your iPod Touch to 3.0 software by whatever way you chose

2. Open your redsn0w folder on your desktop. make sure you iPod is connected. close iTunes and put the iPod touch in DFU mode. Hold both buttons for 9-12 seconds, then let go of the top power button and continue to hold the home button for another 9-12 seconds. let go. Drag the 3.0 update onto the redsn0w.exe file

3. Let it do its thing. As I am told, this shouldn't take more than 2 minutes. I would give it 5. If it does not work, crashes, or freezes, take out the ipod and reset it by holding both buttons and then re-dfu mode it. try again.

As I said earlier I am not responsible for any ipod touch 2G breakage. Do these steps at your own risk. I will have a youtube video up of the process later when I figure out some more stuff, such as custom boot logos and weather we will have the same problem as with 2.2.1 where people couldn't download stuff from the 1.x.x firmware through cydia. O and also, I need my winter board. they already had summerboard, springboard is taken, and 2.2.1 had dibs on winterboard so I guess 3.0 gets fallboard?? someone confirm this.

Also once upgraded to 3.0, cydia will give you a slew of updates that will make many 2.2.1 programs compatible with 3.0

I'm on windows vista, this wont be the same for xp but it probably will for 7. I right click the desktop and personalize, then "Windows Color and Appearance" then "Open classic appearance properties.." then click "Advanced". Its pretty straightforward from there.

You need to try holding down both buttons to see if it resets. if it doesnt then put it in dfu mode and restore in itunes then redo the process. NEVER unplug it unless you see the springboard or the tutorial says to.

That means you didnt hold shift when you clicked restore. If you did hold shift and you did click restore but you messed up on one of the other steps you would have gotten an error in itunes. if you held shift and did everything right you would have hacked firmware AND cydia. since you got everything set up it should take you less than 30 minutes to rejailbreak. all you need to do is put the ipod in dfu mode and do the prejailbreak again, then hold shift and click restore in itunes and find the jailbroken ipsw file than quick freedom made.

it is working i think. if there was a little status bar on the ipod that is good. It shouldnt take that much longer unless its a really old computer. i have a 2005 desktop and it takes me about 50 minutes to do the whole process, and 35 or 40 of it is restoring.

if you did the pre-jailbreak then you will have to put it in dfu mode again and then restore it. if you did not do the pre-jailbreak, hold both buttons down and eventually you will see the apple. release them then and it will power on as usual.

libusb jacked up my usb ports hen i didnt install it just right. if you open quick freedom with your ipod plugged in and it knows what state the ipod is in (indicated in the lower right corner) then it is installed good.

if you know how to make good images in photoshop or gimp then its easy. just get one of the default themes that you hate, and replace the images.

ok. to reset it back to ipod or back to the time dont type anything and press the button to change. im telling you this because if you need to take the ipod to an apple store or somewhere to repair it, a normal restore will not get rid of a changed banner or ipod logo. you need to change it back with mim before you restore, or else they will know it was jailbroken and not fix it. thanks for the 5 star

open quick freedom. download the newest version first, better compatability. click jailbreak ipod. to the right of original 2.2.1 firmware, click download. also make sure you have a check mark next to lib usb, and that you have installed the c++ redistrobutable file. the c++ redistro is the cause for error of compiling the custom firmware. there should be a link on the supplies page.

And A.C.E I know how to fix your problem with the phone apps icon. what you have to do is use WinSCP go to the root of your filesystem and click on library then themes and find whatever theme you are using. After that go to the icons folder in the theme and delete or rename phone.png. Also if you get rename off cydia if you rename a app say gpsphone to gba and lost the cool theme icon for it so what i told you to fix the phone apps icon but instead find whatever app you changed the name of and rename the .png to whatever you changed the name to (and EXACTLY if you mess up with caps it won't work and leave the .png alone that will also mess it up)

yeah i did make one then because i just ha to hack my psp. You can fix a cracked screen very easily, all you need to do is take off the faceplate and the screen just pops out. There is a little plug (that doesnt really describe it) that you have to pop out. You can then buy a replacement screen at a gaming shop or ebay. And I am 14 now, But i dont know if that would make sense. I cant remember exactly when i got my psp, but im guessing that i was about 10 whan i hacked it and 13 when i put the custom faceplate on it. I got the faceplate at decalgirl, but they took off all the good ones.

Since I updated the instructions you only need step 1. Download quick freedom and open it. Click install libusb and you might need to download the 2.2.1 update file also. When you are ready to go you will see all checks. Just read and follow the instructions and you will be fine.

ssh into your ipod and keep going up untill you get to the root of the filesystem. goto the libraby, then click the themes shortcut. the real themes folder is in your var/stash or something. any way, delete the background.png file, but DO NOT DO THIS WHILE THE THEME IS ACTIVE!!!!!!! i can not stress this enough! its just like cryozap said not to, but then i had to try it, and i had to rejailbreak it!! lol no im just kidding. anyway, yeah. disable the theme and then delete background.png from the iglassSol folder located in the library/themes folder of the ipod.

search for iblank in cydia. It allows you to make transparent icons with no names that are just bookmarks in safari, but you can move them around and use them as placeholders.

Oh boy.. I just slide to unlock and then unplug it... What am I in for? Filesystem corruption? And btw, when I had. A failed install of libusb on my 64 bit vista laptop, it wouldn't recognize the iPod at all. Zip nada. I had to completely uninstall libusb and then clean out my registry, and after that I had to repair iTunes before my iPod would connect. It wouldn't even charge, or show up in the USB driver list. Probably would have been easier to do a restore of the last 6 hours' modifications.

Did you hold shift while clicking restore, and the browsed to the jb.ipsw? there are alot of things that could go wrong, and i am not really sure about all the errors.

if you look on ipodtouchfans.com, there is a GUI for jailbreaking called quickfreedom. it makes untethered jailbreaking really easy and fast, and it even helps you install the required programs and get into dfu mode. I used it when I wanted to go from tethered to untethered jailbreak, and it works perfectly. I love jailbreaking!

oh and stream does not mean to watch - stream means to use a file that is downloaded from and stored in a different location:

-watching a video from youtube = streaming because you aren't saving it onto your computer, just watching the video as it is being brought over from google's servers

-downloading a movie and watching it = not streaming, because once its downloaded all of the data is being viewed directly from your computer, and you don't need to be connected to its original source to view it.

ok, what happens when you run ipsw.bat? does a black screen pop up with alot of writing and stay up, or does it just flash for less than a second and then dissapear? try removing the .ipsw from the originalfw file. i really need to address that issue...

hey im sorry if you are on windows sometimes the extensions are invisible, so when you added the ipsw you were unknowingle naming it originalfw.ipsw.ipsw sorry i should have made that a bit clearer.

Awesome. I like your setup (Categories + iBlank . I personally don't have a 2G iPod touch (1st Gen Jailbroken), but I do have a friend that does and would like to jailbreak it. Also, any idea how to explain what a “jailbreak” is to a non-techie? I do know that jailbreaking allows user access to the iPhone/iPod touch filesystem, I just don’t know how to explain it to the less technically-inclined. Thanks. LOL. ok, if you want to explain it to him,(or her) say that it allows you to download appstore apps for free, and it allows you to download jailbroken apps that can do more than apple normally allows, such as: Modifying the icon set directory, background png directory, for your friend that is THEMES OH YEAH!!! Having a program that runs in the background and you can activate it from your computer, which helps you track stolen ipods instead of hoping a theif will happen to open the app that says find my ipod and then allow it to use his location. lol i sure wouldnt, if i was a theif, i would delete it. Retro emulators: to your friend that would be: GAME BOY ADVANCE!!!! and also super nintendo entertainment system (snes) you can play super mario all stars with no lag. i will post screen shots of gpsphone(gba emulator) and snes4iphone(snes) in step 5. check back in about 5 minutes.

Thanks. I already have both the snes and gpsphone emus, also nes, gameboy4iphone, and psx4iphone. Also, what theme are you using? I'm currently using iGameboy Fullscreen + a few custom icons I made myself. I made an installous icon, a psx icon, and an MXTube icon.

i will keep adding new apps and pics to step 5. i heard of a good one that is supposed to come out soon, i think it was tapsd or something. i cant use it, but if you double tap the screen it will zoom out and show you 6 pages worth of apps at a time, and you can tap the page you want to zoom back in on that page. it sounded cool but i got tired of waiting and decided to go with categories.

idk if it is illegal.. no its not so long as you own the game. i goto roms.zophar.net because they arent restricted by esa and they have roms for just about every system, though their servers are down right now. i am using iglassSol, beautiful cydia v2, and bolt action rifle lock sounds. thats awesome that you made your own icons. i need something that can take apart themes, and then recompile it after i replace parts. maybe this is easier to do then i think, but if i want to take a lockscreen from one theme and put it in with the iglasssol theme, i dont know how i would do it..

Look through the filesystem for themes. Then, copy whatever you need from one theme folder to another. I don't know how you can recompile themes, but I just added icons to the iGameboy Fullscreen icons folder.

you probably dont even need to recompile. i was thinking it was a .theme file or something, but from what i have seen it is just a folder that winterboard reads from. i could probably go into the winterboard theme folder with ssh, and with enough proddin i could figure out wha everything meant, and bam! custom themes. i also found ithemeit which supposedly lets you make your own themes, though i havent checked it out that much. i think its only usefull if you have written your own icons, but i could be wrong

I went into the themes folder with Filezilla, found iGameboy Fullscreen, found the icons folder under it, and added the icons there. I haven't been able to make custom themes from scratch, yet, because of lack of knowledge (easy to fix) and lack of time to learn and make a theme (not so easy to fix). I've learned all that I have about themes through experementation, and I warn you, DO NOT REPLACE, MODIFY, OR ADD FILES IN A THEME YOU ARE CURRENTLY USING! I crashed my iPod touch that way. I couldn't reboot it until I restored and rejailbroke it. I had to wait for the 2.2.1 jailbreak (a week). My 2 cents.

yes, i basically have about seven things in all that i enable in winterboard, and i took all of the contents and merged it into one theme folder. i now have my locksounds, lockscreen, battery, icons, background, and boot screens for a lot of apps. soon i will draw my own status bar also. i need help making icons. The iglassSol icons are truley amazing!! i have no idea haw the creator made them. if you have any drawing tips, like weather somebody makes them is a computer drawing program, how to add the glass shine, and how to make them so neat. this is my bike or die icon lol.

Some themes come with blank or template icons you can edit. As an image editor, use GIMP. It's like a free version of photoshop. You have to get used to it, though.

Hmm yeah I have had gimp ever since I had my crashed xp to linux desktop, and when I got my vista laptop it was one of the first things I installed. Maybe I'm just a bad drawer? I will use google images and see if I can't find a plugin that is like gradient but with metallic sheen instead. (lol I'm still going to keep that icon : ) )
