Introduction: How to Make Your Xbox Controller Blink With Some Leds, but It Won't Shake Anymore

Picture of How to Make Your Xbox Controller Blink With Some Leds, but It Won't Shake Anymore

YOUR REMOTE WILL BLINK BUT IT WON'T VIBRATE ANYMORE BECAUSE IN THIS PROJECT YOU HAVE TO TAKE OUT THE MOTOR.

Step 1: MATERIALS FOR THIS PROJECT

Picture of MATERIALS FOR THIS PROJECT

1.XBOX CONTROLLER
2.LEDS
3.SCREW DRIVER
4.SOLDERING IRON
5.SOLDER

Step 2: OPENING YOUR CONTROLLER

Picture of OPENING YOUR CONTROLLER

TAKE OOF ALL THE SCREW BUT BE CAREFUL NOT TO STRIP THEM.
THEN DESOLDER THE VIBRATING MOTORS BECAUSE THATS WHERE THE LEDS ARE GOING TO BE CONNECTED TO .THE RED WIRE OF THE MOTOR IS THE POSITIVE SO MAKE SURE TO REMEMBER WHERE THE POSOTIVE IS .THE LONG STICK ON THE LED IS THE POSITIVE SO MAKE SURE TO CONNECTED POSITIVE TO POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE TO NEGATIVE.YOU COULD ONLY USE TWO LEDS FOR EVERY POWER SOURCE.ANY COLOR OF LEDS.

Step 3: TIME TO PICK a PLACE FOR THE LEDS

YOU COULD PUT A LED ANYWHERE YOU WANT IT, BUT MAKE SURE THE CONTROLLER COVER CLOSES .I DRILLED A HOLE THE SIZE OF THE LED AND IT FITS PERFECTLY.YOU CAN USED A SMALL DRILL THAT MAKES A SMALL HOLE THEN USE A REGULAR SIZE SCREWDRIVER AND SCREW IT IN THE HOLE AND THAT WILL MAKE THE HOLE BIGGER, AND ITS THE SAME SIZE AS A LED.IF YOU DON'T HAVE A DRILL YOU CAN HEAT UP A SCREWDRIVER THEN STICK ANYWEHRE YOU WANT YOUR LEDS TO BE AND THE SCREWDRIVER WILL MELT RIGHT IN AND MAKE A HOLE.

Step 4: PUTTING EVERYTHING TOGETHER

AFTER YOU HAVE MADE THE HOLES CONNECT THE LEDS TOGETHER ANDCONNECT THE LEDS TO THE CHIP AND MAKE SURE THEY WORK BEFORE YOU CLOSE THE COVER.DON'T USE TO MUCH WIRES TO CONNECT THE LEDS BECAUSE THEN THE COVERS MIGHT NOT CLOSE.AFTER YOU CONNECT THEM PUT THE LEDS IN THE HOLES YOU DRILLED .THEN CLOSE THE CONTROLLER COVERS AND MAKE SURE THE WIRES ARE NOT IN THE WAY OF THE BUTTONS OF THE CONTROLLER .IF THERE NOT THEN MAKE SURE THE WIRES ARE NOT STICKING OUT .AFTER YOU ARE ALL DONE SHOW IT OFF TO YOUR FRIENDS.

i agree with jah_temp01...you dont have to remove the motors.

zachsir (author)2008-10-27

you could have instead installed 4 leds each a different color for each of the four buttons by drilling holes in the button backs to let them light up.

punkatsub (author)zachsir2008-11-30

it would be hard but it would make the controller very bad

it is not that i don't like it,it is i like the vibration too much

Ghostsniper (author)2008-04-20

do u think it would work with a reg controller?

rakol1 (author)2008-02-13

where did you get your leds

dannyboy_9472 (author)rakol12008-02-13

Radio shack

Oh God, did we really need to see all those CAPS? that is really anoying. please fix it or take it down. thanks

binnie (author)GiveMeMyCawwot2007-04-06

i agree the major points must be in littles LOL

Holy crap! Look how big that controller is, geez! I completely forgot how big those first xbox controllers were. And yeah...the caps aren't really necessary. It's okay sometimes, to stress one or two words. Not entire sentences or paragraphs.

What is the point of typing everything in caps. What is the point of the Caps Lock Key. I don't know the answer to either of those, so I popped out my caps lock key. Nice instructable, poorly done though. By the way, don't use the cold heat soldering iron unless you feel like frying your controller. I tried to change the led in my mouse once with that thing... poor mouse... but I ramble... This will work with any rumble controller, I might do it with one of my Gamecube controllers.

I was going to ask why you couldn’t just put the LED’s in parallel with the motors. But then I noticed that you used a Cold Heat soldering iron, typed the entire thing in caps (really annoying by the way), and didn’t use any resistors. The soldering iron I can overlook, the resistors could be added with a little help/coaching from the community, but the capitals make my eyes want to bleed.

PLEASE DON'T TYPE EVERYTHING IN CAPS, that's really annoying and isn't really inviting. Quite nice instructable, though.

You shouldn't have to remove the motors; you should be able to just connect the LEDs in parallel with the motors to get both vibration love and some blinky lights. You might want to consider using a current limiting resistor inline with the LEDs, though, lest they suffer a premature death.
