I second the volleyball knee pads, after a bad collision with a down box my knees seem to get easily injured. The soft pads are much cheaper than skate pads and you can put them under your outer layer so most people don't even know that they are there.
Finally, if you are renting boots make sure you let your feet warm up before trying them on. Your foot size can change enough to make it very uncomfortable. Should this happen just go back to the rental shop, most of them will gladly switch out boots. I've seen something as trivial as this ruin many skier's and snowboarder's days.
In terms of goggles I love my electric eg2s. They are gigantic, but sort of look normal on my huge head. They have some of the best range of vision out of all of the goggles out there.
