It already is possible. The ipod has all of its songs stored in a few directories. Point your favourite music application at it, and you should be able to play every thing and delete it from there. But, once that is done, you have to edit the itunes DB file. Remove the song's entry. This works on my 4th (current as of pre september 2011) gen shuffle.
