Introduction: Puff Pastry Intestines

About: Hi! I'm a slightly feral mountain hermit that likes to be helpful. I do community management at Instructables & Tinkercad. 🙌 Want to hear me chat about making? Search "CLAMP Podcast" on YouTube or your favorit…

Perfect food for a Halloween party! These puff pastry intestines can be made sweet or savory, and they're great for feeding a crowd. :D

I chose to fill my puff pastry intestines with sloppy joe mix, but you can really do any filling you like! Once your puff pastry is thawed, you can easily get these on the table within an hour. They're much more simple than they look.

Step 1: Ingredients:

  • 1 package puff pastry, thawed (I used Pepperidge Farm)
  • 2-3 cups of filling (I used homemade sloppy joes, but you could also try a sweet filling, like jam!)
  • one egg, well beaten
  • red food coloring
You'll also need an oven set to 375 F, a 9x13 baking pan lined with parchment paper, and some flour for dusting your work surface. :)

Step 2: Flour and Cut the Puff Pastry

Flour your work surface (you'll need at least 3 feet of counter to do this easily!) well.

Lay the pastry out, and cut each sheet into six strips.

Step 3: Make Three Large Strips

Each large strip is four of the short strips. Dip your fingers into a little bit of water and run then over the ends you want to connect, and then press well to seal.

Step 4: Add the Filling and Seal the Intestines

I added quite a bit of filling and it was a little tricky to get them closed. :) Just cover the middle third of the strips with filling, trying to make it as consistent as possible.

Starting at one end of the strip, stretch the pastry lightly around the filling and press the pastry edges together to close it up. Don't add water to this seam or it'll turn into a big mess - trust me!

Do this to all three strips and then you can start putting them in the pan.

Step 5: Place the Intestines in the Pan

You want to squiggle the intestines in the pan.

You'll be putting them in seam side down so they look nice and neat. Whenever you end one length of pastry, start another in the same area. :)

Depending on your pattern, you might not be able to fill the pan - that's okay!

Step 6: Egg Wash!

To make the egg wash, I beat an egg really well and then added a little red food coloring to it.

Typically you should be using a pastry brush for this, but here at Instructables ours seems to have been eaten by the "borrow it but never put it back" monster. So I am using a paper towel. Like a boss.

Step 7: Bake!

Bake at 375 F for 25 minutes or so - the pastry should be nice and golden brown!

This is best served right away - mine sat around for a bit while I assembled my puff pastry torso appetizer platter. (coming soon!) The bottom got a little soggy, but it was still good. Just not as nice. :D
