I always liked Faberges' 'Trans Siberian Railway Egg' and, when I found a working railroad set small enough to fit into an egg, this is what I came up with. I can't take credit for the railroad set, that goes to Tiny Trains but then, Faberge mainly designed the eggs. He had workshops with crafstmen skilled in various areas eg. enamelling, carving, stone setting, to carry out his designs. This is an ostrich egg which I decoupaged with antique map print tissue paper. I applied mini vintage train posters randomly on the top. It took a while to figure out how to get the wiring through the egg to the battery which I have hidden in the wood base. The layout was smaller than the egg, so I had to build a platform to set it on and then extend the landscaping with materials I luckily had on hand. I even had the right shade for the water. A switch on the wood base turns it on and off. It's quite mesmerizing to look at when it goes around.

Would you be able to add a video? That would be awesome - thanks.

Gorgeous!

Since I didn't see any further reference on the train manufacturer, let me add it here: Tiny Trains makes ready-made (and ready-to-decorate) tiny train layouts in TT scale, which is 1:900! These trains work based on a chain that runs under the layout. The train is connected to the chain through a slot between the rails.

The mini posters are a great touch!!!

Excellent work you can be proud of! Very well done! I watched an episode of "How It's Made" where they decorated an ostrich egg and was wondering... where do you get the eggs? I might want to give this a try, but don't know where to start. Again, very superbly done!

Thank you for your compliment. I belong to a Yahoo eggers group -eggart-and they have lists of suppliers for everything from ostrich eggs to hinges. You can find help and instructions for doing all sorts of eggart. Check it out, you might find yourself hooked.

I want to thank everyone who commented for their kind words. It's nice to get feedback from other than family members. Good luck to all of the finalists.

You deserve nice feedback from people other than family. Family, I have learned can also be your best critics. Your work is nice. I hope that you will continue to pursue and enjoy the art of egguery.

If this egg does not win, then the world is truly lost.

I have to say, so far this is my favourite. Yes some are more glamourous but this one fits with the magic and ingenuity of some of Faberge's pieces. This is lovely. I love the map and poster idea too.

This is so COOL! It's very pretty and the skill is exceptional! I can do craft work but this excells anything I ever thought to do!

What a fantastic, priceless heirloom you've created! If you're blessed with grandchildren they'll surely be fighting over this. Did you paint the sky inside the upper half of the egg?
angelkake (author) says: Oct 3, 2008. 7:26 AM
The upper half of the egg is painted with sky on the inside. It seemed like the logical thing to do.

sorry, did I read this correctly? the train works? Video?? Thats awesome either way!
angelkake (author) says: Oct 3, 2008. 7:25 AM
Yes, the train is battery operated and it goes around the track, over the bridge and through the tunnel.

OOOOOOOOOH! That's awesome, I need to make one like that.

That's amazing work! How long does it take you to make these eggs?
angelkake (author) says: Oct 2, 2008. 1:44 PM
It took me 2 years....I had to think about getting the train, then how to decorate and manage the wiring etc. Now that I know what I'm doing it would probably take about 2 weeks.

OMG it's a steam train, too! A 4-6-2 Pacific, looks like D&RGW livery. I am sick with envy!
