I have used these magnets in place of door latches, to mount antennas on walls, and hide spare keys under my car (I have alot of old spare hard drives!). My favourite use is on my fridge as my key holder. I can toss my keys at the magnet from several feet away and it will stick quite easily! I removed the metal backing from the HDD magnet, but that can be hit and miss sometimes. Sometimes the magnet would pop-off, sometimes the chrome plating peeled off, sometimes the magnet would crack, still, the pieces are still good, even if they are a little sharp. Walmart sells 4 little 1cm² rare earth magnets (that is what HDD magnets are) for like $3.50. They are usually in the craft section.

The rope is a good idea, once that magnet is stuck on the fridge, it's pretty hard to get off.
