Introduction: Basic Stencil

hello there:) this is my first instructable been a huge fan for a while now love the page:) anyways i been getting into stenciling lately i always just been a pen and paper kind of guy but after coming across some cool youtube videos i feel in love first night i drew and sprayed my first piece lol well guess what it was terrible lol :( but i thought id share my love for this and also teach what i know but if you want better information there is a lot of better articles on here and well anywhere online its going to take work from finding which material to use the stencil on to how to design and cut it without it falling apart, so lets begin im assuming you have access to a computer LOL so get on google and search up stencils this is a start you can always use your own photographs to create your own stencil but that can be tricky and well that takes practice to learn how to create them using the threshold technique but thats for later anyways grab the picture youll need you can hand draw it or trace it or print it if you want there is lots of ways of making the stencil using cardboard fiber board basic paper works but the stencils wont last vary long :( i use drawing paper its thicker than printing paper too i have a bunch of vinyl from 3m from my days of vinyl wrapping well i draw what i need then carefully i stick the vinyl onto the back of my paper now i personally think its good i havent seen any one else do it but i havent looked around now there is a ton of things you can use i just prefer this way do some research and youlll see what i mean also poster board the ones you used to use for school works good its big and and one side is ruff while one side is smooth, another way is using table top clear plastic its nice and some what thick and easy to find in most stores such as walmart or target and its cheap for the size.

onto step 2: which is fixing your stencil if it needs to be fixed as you see about i made some changes i added bridges too one vary IMPORTANT step is having no islands this will just come off if you cut around it

step 3: the vary time consuming part is here The cutting:( youll need a exacto knife or a razer place i wouldnt use anything be careful as both tools are sharp use fresh blades always if you are careful a sharp blade wont cut you because it will cut the material easy and wont make you put force to cut which also isnt good because that can make it difficult to cut evenly

step 4: now the painting use spray paint home depot by my house has em for 98 cents basic colors i think just black white and maybe gray i dont know there is a lot of websites out there that sell spray paint keep in mind though in some states you need be 18 i think or all of them? not sure but anyways any spray paint can will work rustoleum, molotow , etc go online and see the graffiti materials sites they can range anywhere from 5-20 dollars some times the specialty cans can be more also buying bulk usually is cheaper

once you are ready to spray choice what you want to spray on can be canvases, wood , plastics, walls if they are your own dont spray on property that isnt yours, but anyways back onto topic lay your stencil down you can use a spray on adhesive to hold it down or i use old nuts from a tool sell they are tiny and have some weight to them or rocks work too grab a dispossible mask or buy a nicer one that comes with filters from home depot or lawes if you dont have one be sure to just be in a well ventilated area but even then the fumes can cause you to get dizzy i learn the hard way LOL but not funny cause its dangerous eye protection is good to some gloves to stay clean too if you want and some type of paper protecting your work area so no over spray, next lay your stencil down with the small weights or spray on the adhesive get it as flat as possible next grab your can test the noozile and spray i i like to stay about 12 inches away even coats in the same direction usually side to side dont stay in one spot to long cause it will make it bleed and not look vary good unless thats the way you going for then take of the stencils and behold your first stencil maybe ? i dont i think i wrote this terribly but #yolo i shall publish it anyways LOL i threw in some extras i did before so have fun
