super duper stump remover powered smoke powder

super duper stump remover powered smoke powder
Basically in this Instructable I will lay out the basics to make flammable powder that yields large amounts of smoke.
As creator of this instructable I am in no way responsible for what occurs as a result of making this stuff.
I also intend this to be for educational purposes only and only done under supervision of someone qualified to handle flammable materials.
Although I have written this I do know people want to make this, so for those that are making this be careful!!
Please don't think any less of me for my stupid attempts at making funnies

Step 1Acquiring the goods

acquiring the goods
Step one:
Get all the things you need
-Sugar
-zip-loc bag
-measuring cup
-Spectracide Stump Remover (powdered)

The first three materials are easy to come by, but the stump remover is a little harder to acquire. I got mine from lowes for about $3, but apparently some states forbid the sale of this. I live in Missouri so good luck. If you cannot acquire this, don't leave just yet, I have more explaining to do. If you got the stump remover go ahead and skip step 2, unless you really want to go through the trouble of geting pure chemicals.

Smoke bombs like this are not toxic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Why else would people use these in paintball matches? And you have to mix the KNO3/sugar at a 60:40 mixture. You can find a page on smoke bombs at united nuclear.

If you look at the MSDS for the spectracide stump remover it is 99%-100% pure potassium nitrate. The only major problem with it compared to getting say 5lbs at another location is the price. It's far more expensive per bottle than getting it bulk in the same quantity.

I would imagine most of us saw that video for colored smoke bombs on metacafe. Any idea on how to make those.(I realize the video instructs on how, i was wondering the specifics of the dyes and where to get them and if it is even possible)

That video is a fake, sadly it is much more complex than that and requires Lactose, Potassium Chlorate and an Aniline dye. The aniline dye costs about £3 per smoke grenade, and is only really worth it in bulk.

It's exactly the same video as the fake one. It's such a shame its a fake too, because it looked really promising.

You can get this in lab grade form extremely cheaply at ebay, sky lighter, thunder valley, cheap chemicals, united nuclear, etc... in most parts of the united states this isn't a controlled substance.

the KNO3 and sugar should be measured by weight, not by the cup......should, but not necessary if people can eyeball it

Oh, and if you want a less pyrotechnic method for stump removal all you need is a big bag of salt. Rock salt works best. All you need to do is cover the stump in the salt then cover the whole thing with dirt. Leave it alone for a couple weeks, and the stump just rots away, whatever's left you can easily dig or chop up. Not an instant removal, but still effective.

KNO3 also known as Saltpeter. You can get it at drug stores, but the clerks kind of look at funny because apparently nobody buys it except constipated senior citizens. I bought some for making smoke bombs and I had to lie to them and tell them it was for a school project.

This becomes a better smoke bomb if you belt it down first also. You can pour it into a toilet paper holder with a wick, straight onto foil, into tennis balls, into ping pong balls, etc. It makes it much more portable and fun to have it in a conveniently transportable form. An aluminum can works really well too if you make a significant size bomb, you can slide a sparkler down into it while it's still hot as a good ignition source.
Nov 16, 2008. 4:52 PMshadus says:
Brain's dead today, "belt it down" = cook it down (over low heat).

Incidentally you can also just pour the powder mix into an aluminum can and use a sparkler to light it that way also.

Actually the best ratios for smoke bombs range between 3:2 (9:6) and 5:3 (10:6). It will work at a wide variety of concentrations though. The higher the sugar content the longer the burn time but the harder it will be to start. You can also color the smoke by adding certain types of dye and change the color of the flame by adding metal salts. Although, of course, the more goes into it the more careful you should be about inhaling the smoke as some metal salts and dyes are toxic.
