the anti wallet

the anti wallet
toss the wallet. it's day is over.
this is a bona fide, fully functioning wallet replacement, not just a supercharged key chain.

some personality quirks nourish love, credit cards lost in harvard square, porter square, davis square and goverment center do not. in order to save a love strained by the constant reliance on the honesty of wage slave clerks, i needed a solution fast.

i thought if i attached her cards to her keys this would ensure that if she did leave them she would soon realize her mistake when she couldn't get into the car or house.

i was even willing to throw money at the problem, however, all the store bought solutions either broke quickly or were too bulky.

i thought about a key ring, but the cards needed to be easily removed if she visited an atm or
summoned by a police officer.

finally i came upon the straight gate carbiner--small enough to fit in your pocket and able to thread a 1/4" punch hole.

Just a couple notes, we've had no problems with wear on the magnetic strips and as long as the cards are aligned the holes do not abrade keeping the cards intact.

You will need:
a three hole punch--$6.00
a carabiner that fits in a 1/4" hole--$2.50

You may need:
clear packing tape
scissors
digitial watch
disposal papermate pen
cable cutter
nail
small metal ring

This is a cool idea, but a word of advice: I recently used a 3 hole to punch a hole in my atm card, and the atms would no longer accept it. I was attempting to remove the rfid chip, and apparently the machines don't like it when you attempt to get off the grid.

Lol, He's probably just worried about the whole rfid hacking threat... You know, where someone waiting behind you in line could steal your info just by being close to you with an rfid reader?

hay_jumper - if you want to get "off the grid" then using an ATM card (even an RFIDless one) is a wonderful way of screaming "HERE I AM" to anybody who cares to look.

If only our country used steel money you could carry a little magnet covered in coins. I guess you could use a little metal business card holder but I'm not sure those have a ring or anything.
Dec 6, 2011. 8:32 AMuberchoob says:
you could still use earth magnets, just putting one magnet on either side of your bills. Be careful not to try the larger ones though, you'd rip up your cash while trying to get them free!

Heh, good luck putting a magnet right next to your mag-strip credit cards. :-)

If you watch Mythbusters you'd know that that Myth was busted, i think it needed a microwave to finally stop the mag strip from reading.. besides everything is chip n pin now anyhow.

Hotel cards, gift cards, and similar cards however, are vulnerable to magnets.

attaching your house key to cards with your address on them... bad idea.

Your driver's license or other state/military issued ID is actually not your property (it's the property of the issuing agency). Therefore, punching a hole or otherwise defacing it could void it (just like laminating your birth certificate or SS card), and could possibly even land you in trouble if you get pulled over and hand that to the officer.
Jul 28, 2011. 8:21 AMtenebrism says:
This is so true. Plus, you won't be able to get a beer anywhere.

When applying for a new license in California, when you go to the DMV to take the photos and get the license set up, they punch a hole in your current license to temporarily void it, which means you have to wait a week to get the new one in the mail. During that week, you can't use it anywhere. I tried getting a beer at a few restaurants, as well as purchasing some wine at a grocery store and they all denied me.

PS... My old license was an out-of-state one. Don't know if that matters.

so much for this being a revolutionary wallet design
Jun 4, 2011. 10:59 PMIncrediblyCondensedBlackMatter says:
i was thinking along those lines too, i was thinking of "half laminating" the cards, and leaving an overhang with a hole punched in it. or even using bike inner tube; it'd stretch for the card to fit in

It may not be for everyone, but I use one of those sharpie minis. they have a ring that fits through my cable lock key ring.

great. the watch is too big for the info it provides. i use the tempo time tag. http://www.vessel.com/prod_cur_tempo.html

Sarcasm: It must be nice to be able to buy an $18 "mini" watch from vessel just because it clips on to your shirt or jacket. The purpose of this whole instructable is to SAVE money not buying an expensive wallet so that we can carry our most used stuff on a clip(or ring or carabiner). I'll stick to the $0.99 watch from the dollar store. Granted, when the battery runs out you have to buy a $4.99 battery at a department store or a pharmacy.... That is why I keep going back to the dollar store and getting a new watch....

i was thinking that instead of punching holes directly into your cards you could use one of those plastic card holder thingums.

and it would still work :D

and for the spare coins you could add a coin pouch keychain

problems solved :D

I created a very similar handy dandy and haven't had any of the problems that have  been brought up. All my debit/credit cards work just fine, no issues with my driver's license, only had rave reviews. I have a strong single hole punch that has served me well.

Every retailer on earth now seems to have a card so I added them too. (that's really where this all began) Some of the store cards have smaller holes, so I centered the existing hole in my hole punch to make the hole larger.

I did have an issue originally with an inexpensive carbiner clip not staying closed so I put my cards on a clip with a screw closed fastener. (found it at my local family owned hardware store)

On the rare occasion I do have a few bills I keep them in my front pocket where they are less likely to be lifted.

I always remove my keys from my clip before I put them in the ignition, so as not to stress the mechanism. So no problem with broken cards.

I haven't added a watch yet (love the idea), but I do have a wee led light on my clip which comes in handy regularly

This has really simplified my life.

I think its fascinating when multiple people come up with the same general idea to solve the same problem without any interaction.

Nice Job... Nice instructable.

From what I've read, the punching holes might be a problem.

I would recommend the JIMI wallet. I've heard pretty good things. I feel like it might create some sort of paradox in the anti-wallet continuum, but it does tie up the concerns voiced above.

I've tried a normal wallet, and I've tried my paper wallet. but for the past year all iv'e ever used was this. your anti wallet with a led light, then 5ft of paracoard wound up, leading to a large carabiner with my car keys. the large carabiner hooks onto my jeans, and the cards go in my front jeans pocket. that way i can snap off my car keys fast, whip out my cards when i need them (credit card is closest to the gate), and use my house key when it's still attached, so i can just drop the key and still have it (when i'm carrying things). I haven't carried anything but some 3x5 notecards in my back pocket for months. and i have some paracord handy if i ever need to tie/lift something. When i work, i move trucks around a lot and i can snap all the pairs of keys on my carabiner so i never loose them (or go home with them) . I can't add up all the money iv'e saved my not being temped my cash only impulse buys, or telling people "I don't carry cash" when they ask to borrow money. if you NEED something, you can use your credit card, or plan ahead and bring a lump of bills. just to clear some things up: yes punching holes in all your cards is the way to go, don't punch through bar codes, magnetic strips, watermarks, or important writing and it's fine. don't ruin the simplicity. punching a hole in your license might void it but if anyone asks, i tell them the hole has to be through a bar code on the back to be voided (i don't know if it's true, but all my voided cards are through the bar code). This explanation only satisfies their interest, they would still accept the card even if it was voided. Stores cant turn you down because you don't show ID. stop carrying cash now and you'll save yourself tons. carry cash in your back pocket, or car. thank you john for this wonderful idea. i'm linking this from my paper wallet instructable.

Actually, if you are (or appear to be) under 27 for tobacco, or 30 for alcohol stores can turn you down, (and have to if they ask and you provide a void ID) it's a federal law that you must show id for these items. Also with purchases on credit cards 15$ or over, at least at most big box stores, you must show ID. But this is just what I know from working at a convenience store and my experiences shopping, so maybe I'm wrong. Either way the anti wallet is pretty cool.
Feb 11, 2009. 2:39 PMjam906 says:
wow! is that the law in america? in england its 16 for tobbacco and 21 for alcohol!
Feb 11, 2009. 6:22 PMsnork8720 says:
yeah, well 18 for tobacco and 21 for alcohol but you've (by federal law) got to show ID until you're 27 for tobacco and 30 for alcohol, although it's not always enforced.
Feb 12, 2009. 8:32 AMjam906 says:
oh right, i think we have a simular law here.
Oct 21, 2008. 12:12 PMtheRIAA says:
"Also with purchases on credit cards 15$ or over, at least at most big box stores, you must show ID." i heard it was illegal to turn people down for not showing ID with CC purchases. They can ask for it, but can't deny a transaction for not showing one. at least in WA.
