the iron nail toy sword and sabre!

the iron nail toy sword and sabre!
hello! i am making tiny swords for a while now, and i thought i should share them. they are made with a specific type of nail, and, as i'm dutch and teenager, i don't know how to call them yet. you see them on the first picture.

description: the nail get's shaped by hammer, to make it look like a sword. actually the nail itself looks like a sword too. it is pretty cool to give to your little brother/kids. i use them for little trophy's i make for my friends.

you see the specific nails and the tools needed, right below these words. and yes, the third picture shows a tool with an almost finished product. you should have some iron wire too.
let us begin...

Step 1The beginning...

the beginning...
find some good solid iron, to hammer on. (something like an anvil)
i use the little flat space on my bench vice, on picture 4. now take your nail, hold it with everything but your fingers, place it on the solid iron, and hammer it. it will look like the left nail on picture one. then, nail the handle hard enough. if you hammer the handle too hard, it will break. and that's what you're gonna do. take the iron wire too, as on picture two. picture three: you hammered the handle off, and are replacing it with the iron wire.

over to the next step...

Those little nail are actually called Rivet and there are for riveting. The actual rivet is what you're using for the handle, The other part is a puller because you are using a pull type rivet. The principe is pretty simple. Using a rivet gun, you enter the rivet into the gun by the puller and put the rivet into a the hole of two metal sheet. Pulling the trigger of the gun actually grip the puller and pull it. The puller is connected to a small ball on the other side of the rivet. When you pull, the ball is also pulled into the rivet and enlarge until the ball arrive where it cannot be pulled anymore (usualy just below the sheet). Pulling more snap of the puller from the ball and secure the junction. There are other type of rivet like crush type, push type and explosive type. They have all the same purpose of joining sheet of material, some are blind, other need acces to the other side of the junction.

 So do you have a miniature display of these weapons? I mean you can make lots of them and then chip some tiny bricks out of one regular sized brick and make a wall. The you could hang up the weapons on that mini wall and display it in your house. Now will you by any chance build a suit of armor from tin cans and iron nails?

Feb 15, 2009. 8:17 PMMattSwan says:
Actually, they're not nails at all, they're rivets. The ball end gets shoved down to the nail part, which bends the metal and fixes something to something else. There ya go. I think they actually clip to lego hands.
Jan 18, 2009. 10:13 PMWurdBendur says:
It might be easier to bend the nail before you hammer. Also, hammering one side more than the other will make it curve away.
