Why does this sound like a ripoff of John Wiseman's SOS handbook? Maybe because this is pretty much a word-for-word ripoff...
Also, a knife handle dosen't HAVE to be wooden. Use whatever is comfortable to you. Some people prefer bone, or kraton.

Instead of tea, I pack bullion cubes. each one makes 6-8 oz. It has a strong flavor and it contains salt which is also necessary. Dilute it further to reduce the salt intake.

Salt = electrolyte

electrolyte powder = powdered salts and acids

Is that why you can drink salt water all day in a survival situation.. hmmm did not know that u so smart thanx for the tip

the human body can survive weeks without food, its last on the survival list. chances are you'll be rescued or have died by then.

True, but have you ever tried building a new shelter after your old one was destroyed when you haven't eaten in two weeks? I'm assuming it's neither easy nor pleasant.

Yes and no. Food makes you feel good, and provides energy and motivation for other things, and your statistic involves just sitting somewhere, not moving/looking for civilization. It's also not too hard to get out there; snares only take time.

Just noticed this posting, so I know it is old, but, REALLY? Might be easier to just say, go to a sporting goods store, buy everything and get a good ATV to haul it all in. OR perhaps buy a potable inflatable cabin, etc. Survival Kit ? I don't take that much junk on a 2 week winter campout !
Anyone who thinks they have to have a wooden handled knife as their most important survival item, really needs to do some serious research, or better yet, get some experience other than "buy it all, yuppie Hiking all the time" stuff.

I agree with you about this posting.

The most important tool you require for survival is your brain. With this unique tool you can construct a fish basket to capture fish, create a snare or make a dead fall to capture small game. Yes, this tool even has the capability for creating fire. Fill this brain with knowledge and your survival kit can decrease in size. A

Nahhh not really maybe they weight about the same that a CD.

Oh. well maybe they're different now. last one I picked up, several years ago, was at least four or five oz, still in the case of course. never had one open.

nice idea. I have several that were taken out of an electronic thingy and was thinking of making a windchime. Now I can use it in my survival kit thanks for the tip.

Also, if you happen to live in an area where moss grows, it always grows on the North side of the tree.  Also, if you happen across a cemetary, tombstones always face East.  The direction of the rising sun.
Oct 6, 2011. 8:47 AMKittyF says:
Moss grows on the side opposite of the prevailing winds if I recall right.
Nov 25, 2010. 3:57 PMJohenix says:
Sorry, but religion and local custom rule. Amoung Christians burials generally so that on the LAST DAY the deceased can sit up facing Jerselum. Thus cemitaries would be differnt in Australia or South Africa.
Islamic burials are with the corpse lying on its right side facing Mecca.

Astronomicly the crescent moon can be thought of as a bow pointing an arrow at the rising or setting sun, from sunset to moonset and from moonrise to sunrise.

I didn't know that about cemeteries... that's cool. I was on a field trip that took us to Kelton Utah... which isn't a town. Its not even on the map. It was an old rail stop for sheepherders, and there's an old pioneer cemetary there. But no civilization. I'm gonna look at my photos and see where the sun was!

I'm holstering the cemetery direction finding tool. Thanks!!
Mar 6, 2011. 11:36 AMBad Maxx says:
I would not stake anything you hold dear on that cemetery myth. There are 5 cemeteries within a few miles of my house. The one thing they have in common? The tombstones all face the road... We even have two cemeteries that are across the road from each other, one (Lutheran) has tombstones going back to the the early 1800's they all face west, the cemetery opposite (Catholic) has tombstones dating back to the mid 1930's most face east (where the road is) some face west in the newer addition. Then we have one outside of town that has tombstones that date from the late 1700's to the 2000's they all face the road, which at that particular spot happens to run North West to South East all of the stones face North West. The oldest Cemetery around here (no one has been buried in it for 100 years) has all of the Tombstones facing North. So although this Tombstones faces one direction or another maybe true in some areas, it is not true everywhere
Jul 24, 2011. 5:30 PMciyona says:
case in point I drive east on a road and the cemetery where my dad is buried his tombstone is facing south. Sorry to bust the bubble but that is fact but I know which way I am driving and considering that a major highway runs near by in a southerly direction I know I am right. However where my grandmother is buried her tombstone does face east.
Jul 21, 2011. 12:12 PMnanosec12 says:
I like the idea of the tombstones facing the road....finding a road is a sure way to find your way home/out !!!

Okay, not all roads go where you want, but they usually go somewhere, and you might be able to find some help.
Apr 29, 2011. 12:42 PMgcollin says:
Probably means a good chance. I live in Colorado and you can drive by a cemetery in the mountains, then keep following that road and not see civilization for days.

Moss likes shade & moisture. In the northern hemisphere, outside the tropics, the north side of a tree will never see direct sunlight. While the rule is not hard & fast, moss does tend to like the north side of things. Also, when I say moss, I am not including Spanish Moss, and I have heard that it is not the same with rocks.  Also, my apologies that may not be the case everywhere.  We live on the edge of DeSoto Natl, and when I heard that when I was (much) younger, I went out back to prove it wrong.......
On the subject of cemetaries, that is not necessarily true, it depends where you live.

Not trying to be an 'Instructa-nazi' as it were (actually I quite enjoy this Instructable), but I'd advise against tea, though I love it so. Most teas have caffiene in them, which acts as a diaretic. Dehydration is the enemy to the would-be survivor. Just trying to help out. And I think I may have spelled diaretic wrong, too tired to figure it out. lol
Oct 6, 2011. 8:41 AMKittyF says:
Ahh, but tea is a comfort and therefore valuable. it's also been proven to keep you alert but relaxed so that you can think better... new research I read of just last month of so.
Jul 11, 2011. 2:08 PMfogman103 says:
Caffiene is actually a depressant.

Jun 5, 2011. 8:21 PMgenaio says:
Caffeine actually is a diuretic, however, you need to ingest high doses to achieve any significant effects. Try not to misquote your sources :)
Nov 4, 2010. 7:39 PMKittyF says:
Tea also contains compounds that relax the mind while keeping it alert. the caffeine can be a boon when you're feeling depressed, lost, confused. I'd recommend it. a little bit of tea isn't going to dehydrate you that much and might help you to focus better.

And Boiled water doesn't need iodine. LOL Kitty
Aug 16, 2010. 2:25 PMseamaas says:
you make a weak tea which will dilute the caffeine. also tea can be used to tan an animal pelt
Oct 6, 2011. 8:43 AMKittyF says:
you'd need a LOT of tea though. And in a survival situation I doubt anyone would be taking the time to tan a pelt. Better just drink it and wear the raw hide til you're in a more stable situation. LOL

For a high calorie/gram food source I would recommend including a pack or two of Jell-O powder. It's made with sugar instead of HFCS and it has sodium and some protein. Plus it comes in like 30 flavors. Just add to some hot water and drink.

Pretty good list. Sorry there are so many people out there that are out to burst your Instructable bubble! I have been watching "I Shouldn't be Alive" and realize that some people just have either really bad luck or are just very ill prepared to be away from a town. I will use most of your list but will make minor adjustments such as an Army issued canteen with cup and stove. also will add matches and hand sanitizer. the sanitizer has a high alcohol content that will burn and you can always keep your hands clean and it will not freeze, be careful though because if it is below freezing outside; the sanitizer is still that cold.

Remember that you should always use most of the stuff in your bugout bag a bit in non-emergancy situations (read as 'PRACTICE') before you NEED it!

Good Instructible and thanks again.
