I made my own blood sauce from maraschino cherries, but feel free to use canned jam or any sweet red sauce. :D
Step 1: Ingredients:
- box of cake mix of choice (this is my favorite!)
- white frosting
- 1/4 cup maraschino cherry juice
- 8 maraschino cherries
- 1/4-1/2 tsp cornstarch
Step 2: The "blood" sauce
I just made this up and I am pretty excited about it. :D
I blended up 1/4 cup of maraschino cherry juice and 8 maraschino cherries. I microwaved that for about a minute and thirty seconds, or until bubbling. I added a little less than 1/2 teaspoon of cornstarch to that and whisked. Microwave again for 30 seconds and whisk again and you should have a fairly thick sauce.
This makes a good amount - you might even be able to do four dozen cupcakes with it.
Step 3: Bake, cool and frost your cupcakes
Bake them and let them cool completely on wire racks. Otherwise the frosting will slide right off the cupcakes!
It's easiest to make the bites if the frosting is thin.
Step 4: Make the bites
The sauce will pool around the bite, which will allow you to drag it down the side of the cupcake with the skewer in whatever direction you like. :)
Once you've done a few it will be easy to figure out how much blood you need.
