There actually are designs which utilize both a spring return on the main body when operated on the horizontal plane and the mass of the displacer is such that the thing "just runs". I think its called a free piston stirling ( not sure).
The problem with using one in a vehicle has always been poor throttle response. I'm sure a stirling/electric hybrid design is at least theoreticaly possible. Funny thing is whenever I pressed "those in the know" about this they usualy say things like you have to use hydrogen as the medium at very high pressures, its difficult to contain the hydrogen, etc. While it is true that hydrogen does yield the greatest efficiency and does need to be "topped off" at some point, I always thought that was a holow argument. Hate to sound cynical and such but I think there are economic forces in play. The greater the public awareness, the faster the "speed of truth".
