Thanks for these detailed steps! An alternate way of wand carving which I prefer would be to cut a small branch off a live tree (however many inches you want...don't worry...if you cut at an angle, the branch will grow back) and then sand it down with sandpaper. Wet, new wood like that is much easier to carve (in my opinion). When I was done carving, I did layered colors of wood varnish (which actually keeps the wood from rotting). Then (for the lighter colored wand) I made lines with my knife before I put the varnish on, and it made it look old. The dark one is my Severus Snape replica. WARNING: Black varnish looks awful on these, so you may want to change to a darker brown like I did. The black I used changed to a very ugly muted gray. See my images for the completed wand.
