This update surprised me as well. I also can't set "Set promoted items" to work, either in Firefox or Chrome. I click the button and it just brings up a pop-up window with the same 5 Instructables that are already there - none of my other ones are available to swap in. Hopefully that's just a bug that will be fixed soon.Also not crazy about the news-feed ish feature (I've seen complaints in other threads about how it's pretty cluttered by things like people favoriting individual projects, as opposed to activity by the author); or how if you go to "All Instructables", all the sort options are gone. Maybe they did this as a way to help less-popular projects get a leg up, since if people are sorting by views and popularity all the time, that creates a feedback loop where the less popular ones never get any exposure?

you don't need a laser cutter fro the acrylic. you can use any thing from a table saw, to a drop saw, or even a scroll saw

If I read that correctly - you're using the same mirrored window tint on the front AND the back of the mirror? If so, you're going to be losing a lot of light, as you want the back surface to be 100% reflective. So, I imagine you'll get a big improvement when your glass mirrors for the back arrive.
I went the lazy way of buying a 12 inch clock and using the frame, front glass and inside case to make mine. Black poster board cut to size with mirrored window tint spray glued to it in the back and the glass front covered with mirrored window tint on the inside (mirrored side in of course). I am still experimenting with the mirrors as I now get about 8 levels of reflected LEDs going in but I want more. This is the clock that I used $12.99. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01DW6KROWI had to put a small crimp between each LED to get the 60 pixel strip to fit in the 12 inch clock case, maybe a 13 or 14 inch clock would work better but this was the first attempt so I made due with what I had.This photo is with 5% mirrored film front and back, I have ordered some 35% film for the front and actual glass mirrors for the back. There are still a few bubbles that I need to work out of the front film but that will wait until I get the darker film. This photo was also taken under florescent lights, it looks much better in the dark.

IMHO the problem comes down to usability vs real accuracy and the creation of files that you can use in other programs.When 123D came out I thought this is the only program I ever need.Shortly after models got more complex and I realised dealing with them for changes is a total pain.Then came the problem of using them in other program, even if just for 3D printing.Creating a complex solid that is "watertight" and correct in terms of having no errors is next to impossible within 123D.If it just the look you are after like for a 3D presentation no problem, if you want to create something real from it you are lost IMHO.I reverted back to using Sketchup and although nowhere near being perfect for the job either it at least allow far easier editing and corrections.Tinkercad is used a lot by other people and same is true for Solidworks in the professional range.But if you are good at math and like formulas Openscad might be the thing for you.If you here create a complex gear the right way you don't have to edit anything manually to make changes.You change the diameter of one sproket and the coresponding one(s) change too with the right number of teeth to make it work.A lot of editable models on Thingiverse are made this way. - Downunder35m
Thanks for the tips. I tried Fusion on my iPad and it didn't seem to let me create from scratch. Maybe I need to try on the desktop. BTW, this topic is as relevant today as it was a few years ago. How to Write a Good Electronics Instructable
I'm sure this being an old topic may not produce a response but ..... Back in the days of Floppy discs (ancient history here), I had access to AutoCad r13 at work. I loved it and learned as much as I could through a companion book (another ancient commodity) I bought at a book store. I studied the program and how to use it without knowing what I would do with the knowledge, but I loved it. Then I changed jobs. Fast forward many years to now being into retirement without the disposable income I used to have, I find myself wanting to get back into 3D modeling and making things with the invention of 3D printers. I too tried 123d but now have just switched to Tinkercad in hopes of finding a tool to design and make things.123d was for me to limiting in allowing me to design what I wanted to make. I looked up all the referenced programs above but all seem out of reach for a fixed income now. Does anyone know of a free program that is worthy of creating or replicating items in 1:1 scale down to 1:24 in order to print them on a 3D printer? - Newoldbuilder

Hi - people seem to keep finding this topic even though it is almost three years old! I've recently tried Autodesk Fusion 360 and am MUCH happier with it. It "feels" more like a real CAD program and the interface is much more intuitive. It's free for hobbyists so I would give that a shot. For the record though, I haven't used 123D Design for a couple years, so have no idea if it has improved.

Hi Nate -1. Yes, it should work if you just cut off the connector. That will leave you with separate red and black wires.2. Since there's a built-in switch then no, you don't need a separate power switch.3. Rechargeable batteries should work, but you might want to use a slightly smaller resistor since the voltage is lower. I was really lazy with this project and didn't do the math to size proper resistors, I just grabbed some off my shelf and eyeballed it. There are lots of tutorials online that will show you how to do resistor calculations for LEDs though.
Hi BenI am doing electronics at A2 level and I want to make a infinity mirror clock where the LED's are two colors one for hours and one for minutes and make it have changeable modes. I will also be making it with picaxe. So do what do you think of my idea and do you have any ideas or tips to help me and if you could only have two colours which two would you have?

What is the thickness (height) of the wood box? From the photos I'm guessing around 6"?
That sounds about right but the exact height shouldn't matter. I wouldn't go too small or you won't have enough depth for the backs of the electrical boxes.

So, the short answer is "it might work, but not very well." The longer answer (this requires a basic understanding of voltage, current, and resistance, which is beyond what I'll explain in this comment - check out this tutorial if you aren't familiar with those terms: https://learn.sparkfun.com/tutorials/voltage-current-resistance-and-ohms-law/ohms-law): traditional dimmer switches are designed to work well with incandescent bulbs, not LEDs. They work by changing their resistance when you turn the knob. This works well with incandescent bulbs because their brightness is roughly proportional to voltage across them. That's why you can get a very linear response from "off" to "full brightness" when you turn a dimmer switch.That is NOT how LEDs work. LEDs have very nonlinear behavior where they will not turn on at all below a certain threshold voltage, and then will rapidly go to full brightness. So, LED brightness is usually controlled by something called Pulse Width Modulation (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pulse-width_modulation) - basically flickering the LED on and off faster than the eye can see, to control the effective brightness. So, you can try sticking a dimmer switch in this circuit, and it might work, but it won't have the same "feel" that you're used to from dimmer switches. The LED might not turn at all for much of the knob's rotation.It certainly can't hurt to try though. If you're new to electronics and intimidated by this, I'd recommend getting some alligator clips:https://www.sparkfun.com/products/12978They will allow you to easily make temporary connections before you have to worry about soldering, so you can test everything out before you start building.Good luck and let me know if you have more questions!
Very cool. I'm a bit intimidated to try this but will give it a shot. Would a dimmer switch work with this? Would I need to change or add any components?
