    How much did that single Flipdot board with "control unit" cost? I was looking at their website and they don't have any prices listed, and it looks like they don't include the control board (the one that interfaces with RS485).

  • How to DIY a Gatling Gun-Style Voice-Controlled Wi-Fi Speaker

    Cool project! You mentioned "the sound quality [could] be improved" at the end there... There are some resources available online for calculating the ideal size of enclosures for speakers, especially for a tuned low-frequency cavity such as one used in a subwoofer. I believe using such tools you should be able to improve the volume and quality tremendously without compromising the shape and aesthetic of the project!The tools were developed for DIY audiophile speaker enthusiasts making custom wood cabinets for their speakers, but with the advent of 3D printing and laser cutting materials, I believe the gap between high-end and DIY can be bridged.Here are a couple tools I found with a quick googling for "speaker tuning calculator":http://www.linearteam.dk/default.aspx?...see more »Cool project!   • Gduino-No Programmer Required!! for 5$,Programs Multiple AVRs

    I whole-heatedly agree: though financially it makes more sense to just buy a "Pro Mini" or other variant of Arduino clone, the technical knowledge gained from rolling your own board is invaluable! I have absolutely no background in EE or Comp Sci however through playing with my Raspberry Pi and subsequent Arduino (THROUGH the RPi), I've learned so much! I can now take "broken" electronics from the side of the road, desolder bits that I need and make something new!

  • Raspberry Pi as low-cost HD surveillance camera

    i recommend switching to MotionEyeOS. It's a super small (~44mb) download, purpose built (timelapse photography or surveillance) with built in Motion support, web interface by default, can upload to windows share, dropbox or google drive out of the box and can use the CSI camera interface or USB webcam.This is a great instructable for DIY but I've found using MotionEyeOS waaaaay easier.
