    From what I understand the idea is to trick your body with the "intermittent" part into not going into starvation mode. If what I've read about it is correct your body is used to going through a period of time between meals and this fasting is just increasing the time between meals and attempting to find the right balance between the number of calories you consume and the amount of time your body is not treating itself as starving. (from some studies I've read the signals from your stomach to your brain play an important role in this so drinking water can also convince your body that you are not starving as much.)
