TOTALLY. I want to have 6 of these at a decent cost, but not functionally useless. A decent flashlight with no battery just sounds great, but commercial versions I have had have been garbage too!
How much do all these parts cost approximately?I'm thinking of making this with my kids and they LOVE flashlights, but if it is more than $20, I can't justify it.

So, like... I am a science teacher and I have the concern that the voltage is not quite what the phone expects. The phone wants 12V and is getting 9V. I know we are taking emergencies, so even if you fry your phone, it is probably worth it to save a life. But I want to know, IS THERE A BIG DEAL with the input being 9v verses the 12V it would want to have? Will the electronics inside the phone regulate the voltage?
Due to this being outdoors, I would recommend using SPAR urethane which is rated for just that. I have gotten even paper mache' to resist rain with SPAR. Anyone at the store can point it out to you.
