About:I am a licensed Electrician, as a youth I was farm raised. On the farm we learned how to repair everything with what was immediately available. Mixing parts or fasteners from anything to make something work. Recently prior to finding this site, I and my wife built our home. Only things we didn't do: concrete floor, drywall. I had help on the roof & a/c. I will be showing some of the different things we did to the house soon. Some: We have metal roofing and siding for durability/ less maintenance. We installed 6 polycarbonate clear panels on roof for 'skylight' purposes. Installed 4 windows in ceiling area of kitchen & living room, 1 window in bathroom in ceiling & 1 window in the stairs. We applied 'cracked' looking clear film to windows, so people cannot see the roof trusses. We built a chicken coup & fenced run from mostly free parts or Craigslist items. My brother calls it the 'Cadillac Coup'. I will be adding solar power/light this Autumn using ideas from this site. We heat our home with an exterior wood burning boiler. Heated water runs underground to house, thru heat exchanger in furnace & thru heater exchanger in 'hot' water heater. Since we live on 40 acres of woods, plenty of wood for future. I have been kicking around the idea of installing black piping on the south facing roof to heat our 'hot' water tank during the summer. I have found some great information on this site. I stumbled on this site during our current drought. Since rain barrels are only good when it rains; we save our shower & 2 sinks water into 3 -55 gallon barrels for garden use. The added benefit is that soaps & shampoos are natural bug deterents on plants. All other plumbing goes to septic tank. My wife makes our own detergent for the front load wash machine. Cost is less than $1 per gallon. We also use white vinegar for clothes softener. I built a portable rack for clothes drying from rigid galvanized conduit. She is researching how to make soaps.
