Thank you! Actually, the one set pictured that I built without the stain on and making everything octagonal in theme appears to be based on your design! It was a fun challenge to make, especially the time it took to measure, scribe and finally plane the corners to look "just right". Thank you for your inspiration and mental stimulation :)
I made all these sets without the use of power tools! For making the Kubb (using 4x4 posts), each was cut with either a 1904 dated miter box and saw, or just cut with a handsaw. For shaping the Kubb down to 3x3 (US Kubb Tournament sized), I used a froe and mallet to cut the bulk off, then finished with a hand plane making it to size.King pieces done similar with chisel, saw and mallet.Hope you enjoy my work! :)
Another method you could have used instead of chiseling out the end for the matchbox section would be to have used a coping saw. The grain of the wood was running parallel to your clearing cuts and chiseling out (more mortise cutting) can be difficult at times. With the rip cutting made already with the band saw, it might have been easier on a coping saw blade to go in, make the turn cut with it and in the end have a nice, clean space within with little clean up afterwards.Overall, great Instructable here! Loved your work with this project! :)

It also depends upon the status of the soldier themselves wearing the armor. Soldiers on foot (usually a peasant or sometimes gentry) when engaging the enemy, their armor would want to have blows reflecting downward with top overlapping lames (lamellae) because strikes came in from above. Nobility however, came in on horseback so they could see above the masses and lead/guide their troops accordingly, so attacks to their person came in from below and upward. So take the same premise of the foot soldier armor and reverse it. Otherwise, a stabbing attack on the cavalryman would result in coming under the line of lamellae and right into the torso, with death within minutes or instaneously.
