About I’m a researcher and PhD candidate at Brunel University in London, specialising in design for behaviour change for social and environmental benefit, and I also do consultancy as Requisite Variety, much of which involves running workshops exploring design, people and systems. My Design with Intent toolkit is a resource of design patterns for influencing behaviour, drawn from a range of disciplines, that can be used as a brainstorming tool for designers and other stakeholders. Since 2010 I’ve been part of EMPOWER, a collaboration between More Associates, Brunel and Warwick, part-funded by the Technology Strategy Board, aiming to reduce the environmental impact of workplaces through user-centred design for behaviour change.
In the past I’ve worked on folding bikes and mobility products with Sir Clive Sinclair, written a book about the Reliant Motor Company and studied Technology Policy at Cambridge. The Design with Intent and EMPOWER projects have provided opportunities to collaborate and engage with a diverse set of organisations including Philips Research, the RSA, IDEO, Department of Energy & Climate Change, Norwegian University of Science & Technology, Clearleft, Institute for Government and West Sussex County Council.
