The concept will work. Two safety items: Put safety chocks on both sides of the opposite wheel and put at least one jack stand under the car behind the wheel that is in the air and let the weight on the jack stand. You can use boulders for wheel chocks and a log or other object for a safety stand. When the engine fires it can cause a rapid small jerk backwards, knocking it off the jack--particularly the style of jack found in most passenger cars. They are inherently unstable. Once it rolls off, you have a runaway car.Good tip for emergency situation. I've done things like this, and like putting a fan belt on a running engine. Not smart, but saved the engine and the load of perishables I was transporting. :-)
