If you are cutting your bread and "squashing" it - you are using a dull knife or the wrong knife to begin with. Use the right tool for the job at hand. A bread knife can be had for as little as $10 and up. Perhaps you already have a serrated knife in your knife drawer. or holder. A straight edge or a dull knife will cause you to apply pressure when cutting your bread and therefore "Squishing" the loaf when trying to cut it.
