    My son (1st grade) had a very hard time with his homework this week, learning how to use doubles plus or minus one. I decided to try to solidify doubles for him and work on understanding the relationship between the numbers.We started by skip counting and jumping on the numbers on the grid and talked about why the numbers are all two apart. Then we worked our way through the cards. Every time we added a card, we would practice that card and any other cards that we already covered. He was soon able to figure out the doubles that he didn't know by plus or minus two. I also wrote 1-20 stacked vertically on another part of the sidewalk to work on skip counting.
