  • When you have to say goodbye, How to properly bury a pet.

When my dear, goofy hound of 14 years needed to pass last year I took the opportunity to express my sadness and sent an email to notify everyone who had known her, expressing my sense of loss and recalling so many of her good qualities and quirks. The exercise was incredibly useful in focusing and processing my grief, recalling so much and validating all the ways in which she enriched my life and provided meaning. I was rewarded by many responses from the recipients and even some requests for portions of her ashes to sanctify many of the places we had enjoyed together. The Animal Rescue League of Boston provided individual cremation at a very reasonable price and returned her remains in a wooden box better than the cardboard one in which my mother returned.
