Unfortunately, this process is very much obsolete. I've found no method of accomplishing this in newer versions of Mac OS.
Yes. It looks like a crack in the surface glass, not the actual LCD screen. It's likely a part of the LCD assembly though and would be difficult to find a replacement other than replacing the entire assembly. If this is a touch screen it could effect that feature.
It's very unlikely that the screens are compatible. If they have the same or very comparable part number, it's possible that the screen is simply installed inverted from the other brand. I would do intensive research before attempting to connect the display. Even if the connectors are identical, if the connectors don't have the same layout then attempting to use it would destroy either the display, the logic board or both!
In current versions of OS X, you would get the developer tools by installing XCode from the App Store. It's a free download. Preference files (plist) are now editable directly in the XCode app.LasVegas
