Hey Linux!

I gots a question for you =P

I'm trying to install Xubuntu on a Win98 machine. I used my XP laptop to burn an ISO file to a CD, but... how do I boot the ISO file?

Any more info you may need, I'll send your way.
Mar 1, 2008. 8:13 AMLabot2001 says:
its running PhoenixBIOS; i know that for sure... I'll try to take some pics later... But this thing is junk, really. I said it's running Win98; what I meant was it has 98 installed on it, but it won't load. Hence the switch to Linux. The BIOS menu works perfectly fine right now; I'll definitely get some pics for you. Thanks for the help!
Nov 2, 2008. 1:27 AMDerin says:
hah.go to advanced cmos(or bios,my bios remembering is a bit rusty) then go to first boot device press enter and set it to cd,then set second to usb or floppy(if you want) and set third to HD(if you did usb or floppy for second, otherwise yse second) then go back to the main menu and do save and quit

2. ATAPI CD-ROM Driv
3. Removable devices
4. Network Boot

>Hard Drive (opens a menu)
>Removable devices (opens a menu)

Exit
(I'll omit this info)

*It should be noted that I haven't changed the boot order yet, in case some of this info may be of importance to you. Let me know what you think as soon as you can! (Sorry about the long response time on my part X_X )

Did you burn the ISO with the right software?
Mar 3, 2008. 3:51 AMLabot2001 says:
just got some ISO software & burned the disc; works great! Thanks!

That's alright =]
Mar 2, 2008. 12:02 PMLabot2001 says:
I dunno, just burned it using the default Windows burning wizard. What do I need to do, exactly?
Nov 2, 2008. 1:28 AMDerin says:
so,that means you burnt the iso file, that will do nothing, but the files the cd image(iso file) need to be burnt
Mar 3, 2008. 3:53 AMLabot2001 says:
I followed up on whatsisface's comment above. I didn't burn the ISO image with the right software =P lol

anyways, i got it up and running off the CD, but it sure does make a lot of noise... I'll have to load it to the HDD and go from there. Thanks for all the help!
Mar 2, 2008. 12:01 PMLabot2001 says:
Sorry, hard to diagnose from far.

Understandable. Yes, the drive works. I think the CD is bad. It won't work in any of my PCs. I'm gonna follow up on what whatsisface is saying up there.

Mar 14, 2009. 11:47 AMUbuntuNinja says:
If your computer is old, you could try Xubuntu. That is pretty good for speed-challenged computers because it uses the Xfce desktop. Does the Macbook have Linux on it? If your computer is a ppc i could link you to an unofficial build of an Ubuntu variant for ppc.

Hey Linux, yesterday I got off my lazy a-word and figured out Ubuntu, and I can now dual-boot with either Vista OR Ubuntu (yeah, a lot's happened since I was last on here...) Jeez, those FSF/GNU fans really know what they're talking about. I don't know why Microsoft tries to keep up. Free software FTW!!! (Say, what if some free software fan invented an new game console, and FSF started making games for it? My free software life would be complete...) Did I mention I like free software?

Hey, I just installed Damn Small Linux (DSL) on my thumb drive. Are you familiar with this version of Linux? If so, I have a few questions.
Feb 23, 2009. 11:52 AMYummyPancakes says:
Never mind, I got Ubuntu instead. In fact, I'm in Ubuntu right now. It's great, I love it. (Keep trying to write batch at the shell though... That'll take some getting used to.)
Feb 23, 2009. 11:54 AMYummyPancakes says:
I probably won't have questions until I back up my WinXP hard drive, so I can stop using the LiveCD.
Feb 23, 2009. 11:58 AMYummyPancakes says:
Oh, here's one: As long as I'm using the LiveCD, I want to store all of me downloaded files on my flash drive (so I don't screw up my hard disk, you know). I can't figure out how to cd over to my flash drive from the shell prompt. I know some bash, but not a lot. Thanks for the help.
Oh yeah, the USB port on WinXP is E:\, if that helps.

I think you might be able to help me with this... I just got an Acer netbook. It's the ultra-cheapo version, and while the hardware is pretty good, the OS is worthless. I've messed around with Linux some before, mainly with various derivatives of PCLOS and Ubuntu, and I really like PCLOS 2007, so I'm trying to put it on my Acer (TinyMe 2008.0, actually). Boot process goes okay until it needs graphics, then I get an Xvesa error. I've messed around with all the video settings, but just can't get it to work. This may be a moot point, because if this doesn't work soon I'll give up and try Debian, but I'd still like to know what the problem is.
Jan 22, 2009. 7:04 AMdjmachet says:
to get ubuntu to boot past loading graphics section on my HP omnibook, had to change loadup option to include noapic, once I'd installed the OS, never had this problem again - don't know what an Xvesa error is or terribly much about linux to be honest (you've probably already tried noapic)
Jan 22, 2009. 10:04 AMyourcat says:
??? It just gave me a bunch of GPU and monitor settings, and the only other thing I've tried is the video safe boot mode...
Feb 6, 2009. 9:42 AMyourcat says:
Xubuntu works! Now to put openbox, opera, oo.org, etc. on it... now that I write it down, I wonder why all my favorite software starts with an O?
Jan 24, 2009. 3:34 PMyourcat says:
I just tried DSL and, for once, got everything to boot fine (with Xvesa). I installed it, and then on the reboot GRUB failed with error 15.
Jan 24, 2009. 9:05 AMyourcat says:
I tried Debian (with Xorg), and it gets to the same point and then says it can't find my screen... what am I supposed to think of that?
Jan 22, 2009. 10:07 AMyourcat says:
so that would mean no tinyme, and I don't know what PCLOS has, so I guess I'll just try that next. If that doesn't work, I'll just try Debian.

Hey, Linux, I wanted to thank you for joining the discussion of science "vs." religion. I don't know if you've followed some of the exchanges between me, Skunkbait, and Goodhart, but they've all been exclusively Christianity-based. It would be great to have someone familiar with Islamic intellectual traditions contributing as well.

Hey Linux! Trying to install a new theme... Have you ever done this before?
Mar 4, 2008. 4:25 PMLabot2001 says:
xubuntu, which runs on the xfce desktop, i believe...

So far, I've extracted the xfce theme file to my desktop on the linux PC. According to this guy, I'm supposed to get the folder to the location /usr/share/themes/, but when i dragged the folder, it wouldn't let me.

He also mentions something about typing in a code, but I have no idea how to do that either =/
Dec 11, 2008. 7:08 AMDerin says:
Ok,here is the simplest command that got the job done.
sudo mv /(Folder location) /usr/share/themes
  • Change the part in parentheses to the place your theme folder is.
  • Put a space between the two directories!

what is root's password?
Mar 7, 2008. 3:34 PMLabot2001 says:
Eh, not that I remember... But it did ask me to make a user, which I named "mark", and then I made a password for that... So would I type in user: "root" and password:"(the one I have for mark)"?
Mar 8, 2008. 4:57 AMLabot2001 says:
let's hypothesize for a moment.... say that I am "basically screwed"; would I be able to use command line? (If it's really as asdfgh as you say it is, we could do the webcam thing; that is, assuming that you can maneuver through command line :)

and if that's not an option/doesn't work, could I re-install the OS? or try a different one? I have ISO files for Ubuntu, Mandriva, and Fedora; I could burn any of those and try those if I have to...

Anyways, I running downstairs to try that out right now...
Mar 8, 2008. 5:36 AMLabot2001 says:
I currently have xUbuntu; I've been doing some research and I'm going to "upgrade" to Ubuntu; hopefully I can get a root password lol.

Does ubuntu have a remote desktop feature?

I don't know, but I'll definitely look for one; that would probably help a bunch. Only problem would be if you're running another OS, would it work? I'll try to find out as much as I can...
Mar 8, 2008. 6:42 AMLabot2001 says:
Ubuntu is installing right now; once it's completed I'll try to find remote desktop (or I can search the Ubuntu website for one?)
Mar 8, 2008. 10:01 AMLabot2001 says:
How do I get to command line?
Mar 8, 2008. 3:13 PMLabot2001 says:
Okay. It turns out that Ubuntu comes WITHOUT a root account. After many Google searches, I've found out that by going to Terminal and typing in sudo passwd root I can create a root account and password. I just did that, logged off of my user account, and tried to log in as root... But it said that root couldn't log in from there. Any ideas?
Mar 8, 2008. 3:33 PMLabot2001 says:
No, no, no. Ubuntu is supposed to come without a root. They intended that. They think that you should use sudo for everything. But there is a way to create a root. I just did it.

However, it won't let me log on. *sigh*
