Obviously you can take eight solved 3x3x3 cubes and build a 9x9x9 cube but are there other ways? It looks like using up the parts that stick up through two layer on the bottom and a symmetry preserving approach works pretty well
Pretty big. 15 feet by 10 feet and a high ceiling helps. However scale it down to half this size and almost any room will do.
