I've used this method, it works.
As far as finding them, look for the largest pile of dirt they've piled up, poke around with a hoe handle til you find the hole, put the gum in. You can also use a waterhose to dislodge the piles of dirt and the holes will be visible. We are 100% lawn chemical free so we have tons of the little varmits. If you discover their "home base" (they live in the highest part of your yard with a HUGE mound if dirt on top) you can put mouse/rat killer around the area.
