How is this holding up? Is it cracking or otherwise coming apart? I would think that the different expansion rate of the bricks and the concrete would cause problems over time.

That angle grinder would be faster than the screwdriver and hammer for cutting off the top. Just do plunge cuts first to avoid breaking the cut off disks, then grind the remaining arcs off with the wheel.

If you check your local yellow pages (or modern analog) you will probably find a place near you that does granite countertops.I promise you will find a dumpster there that is packed full of broken and offcut peices of countertops. these have already been lapped flat and will not flex, and are free.Happy hunting!

Eventually your mineral content will go up, since those don't evaporate like the water does. However, if you have a deep gravel bed and plants, you shouldn't have to remove water very often at all. Like once a year or so.I'm sure that delicate fish liek discus wouldn't like it, but stick with fish that have been bred in aquariums for 20 generations and you'll be fine.

Moss is a non-vascular plant, it really only has rootlets to grab onto stuff. It gets no moisture or nutrition from them. It's also a lot harder to kill than you might realize.

I will be interested to see how long this lasts. I hate to say it, but that particle board you used for the bottom won't react well to being wet all the time, and that tarp is going to almost guarantee that.However- Once it starts to come apart, you can easily build another one! It might work out so that the planter disintegrates at the same rate the plant inside needs to be repotted anyway. It looks great, and I like the instructable. very clear and concise.
