Thanks for the ideas, the photos, and the hilarious storytelling! Your panache for exposition really lightened the journey, and I read the whole thing from stem to proverbial stern. If I were to do one of these myself, to address the weight-balance concerns, I think donor-vehicle selection would be paramount. All the smallish hatchbacks and wagons have the wheels really far back, with the notable exception of the VW Passat. That could be an interesting base to build from! I think you should look at solid-state battery isolator/combiner setups. Throw a self-resetting thermal breaker in-line to protect the trailer harness, and you've got yourself a trailer battery that automatically charges from the tow vehicle when it's running, and then isolates the trailer loads so as not to drain the ...

Throw a self-resetting thermal breaker in-line to protect the trailer harness, and you've got yourself a trailer battery that automatically charges from the tow vehicle when it's running, and then isolates the trailer loads so as not to drain the starting battery while parked. And if you ever do the PV-panel setup you talked about, such a setup will also let the trailer charge the tow vehicle's battery, so you can run the radio/fan/whatever with the engine off as long as the sun makes up for it.

Have you considered adding a smaller-diameter "drive wheel" to the motor's actual shaft, rather than relying on the O.D. of the outrunner? Author is right, choice of motor KV and other parameters should allow all these parameters to be built into the motor, but since motor manufacturing isn't ideal and this market is small, perhaps turning a roller is worth a try.

The concept here is so elegant, and the execution so clean, it would be easy to forget how much work went into developing it. Thank goodness there are a gazillion photos and lots of explanation behind the scenes! This is a spectacular writeup of a very cool project. I've built "servo testers" into finished projects a number of times; costume and prop folks love 'em as a simple way to make something distant move or wave. Glad to see that technique becoming more widespread.
