To be honest, most tuners aren't perfect and one of the strings is usually out of tune. Tuners seem to get E wrong. I just tune by ear and it works great.I suppose more expensive tuners would do well, but ears are free.
What if you were to cut out a square within one of the sides that was a square and make that hinged? All the edges would maintain contact, and therefore, you wouldn't have to sacrifice strength for practicality. It's quite a nice creation regardless of access to the inside. Keep it up.
