I Made a Toilet Tank Sink!
A hole near the top would just let the fan air out almost immediately, some air would reach the bottom. although the air in the bottom would mostly stay there because of the fans ability to output air isn't great enough to compete with the fans ability to push air since most would just be leaving through the top (path of least resistance). Now I'd you want to have air flowing out of the top you could buy an extra piece of flexible tubing and a screw clamp to be able to route the air wherever you would like (routed to a computers intake fan, or to a fan that oscillates to cool more of the room, etc.) possibilities are endless.
