Did you try to cover LED tape (between LEDs) with scotch tape?)
Diode laser etching of a PCB. DIY from A to Z.
3D Printing Class
thormj, thanks for the example! I bought DIY and Makeblock from China for $200-300, and used diodes Endurance L-Cheapo 2W-5W for $200-500. So DIY+3.5W costed me ~$500. It's a high quality enough for precise engraving and 3mm of plywood cutting. But I've got difficulties with transparent material. Therefore I put opaque material under glass/acrylic. And it needs several hours to cut thickness 3-4 mm of plywood. So, CO2 laser machine for $300 is an interesting alternative for me.
I'm happy to find colleague. I use the same laser diodes instead of CO2. http://www.instructables.com/id/Diode-Laser-Etchin...I really doubt if you can buy CO2 laser machine less than $1300. Please, give the link.

I think this will go much better with a thin layer of black ink over the pcb. It will enhance the laser effectiveness and also demand much less power to do the same job. But neat idea!
I personally get excellent results with the toner transfer method and that's using semi-glossy magazine paper. judging by images they don't look like sharp lines to me, I work down to 300mil with TT method. But neat idea and Thanks for sharing.
