It's fine if you breath it, but like anything (including dust and pollen) you will have some respiratory problems if you try and breathe in a handful of the stuff. You can spread it without wearing a mask, you can spread it on your bed and sleep in it. It is safe!!!See link from Oregon State Univ. http://npic.orst.edu/factsheets/degen.htmlFor thousands of articles from research orgs on the safety of "food grade" vs "heat treated"https://scholar.google.com/scholar?hl=en&as_sdt=0,...
"Food grade" DE is NOT carcinogenic, the type that is heat treated to crystallize the silicates is used for swimming pool filters will damage your lungs and can lead to something like asbestosis. Still works on bed bugs, but really bad to breath or to get in your eyes. Food grade is safe in every way. I cover my dog, as bed bugs will bite dogs if their human hosts are not available. It also keeps the fleas and ticks away, although I don't know why. The DE does not "cut up" the bed bugs so they will bleed to death, it makes tiny cuts in the coating over their exoskeleton and this causes them to desiccate, or dry out. It takes 7-21 days for them to die.
