No, it's similar in that is uses electricity to create heat but you use an air compressor at about 80 psi along with it to create the plasma arc that heats the metal and the air blows hole through it. A welder and Plasma cutter both use about the same amount of current which varies depending on the thickness of the metal. I hope that makes sense.
