I think that this is such a neat idea and that if I were to do it, I would need to convert 2 disk drives into this with a simple mod. Before I do that though I am wondering if there is any chance that the one ribbon cable you have to cross over the other one will potentially damage it with lots of use.

A little trick I learned in com tech at school is to stick the tape to your clothes a few times so I gathers some lint as that makes the tape less sticky and easier to remove from the sticker.

I don't know if this of any significance, but when you start talking about temperature in step 3 the values next to the numbers are binary representations of them. Example 16 = 10000 and 10000 in decimal is 16.
