Nope, the device sleeps and consumes a bare minimum of energy, when it wakes up it connects to wifi network and sends a ping. the ping is there to ensure that the battery and the device are still working even tough the button is not pressed. You can experiment with deep sleep and put the optimal time delay for the ping, but if the device does not send a ping for a day, then the battery can die and you won't notice for a whole day.
