Hey, Great job with your CNC machine... I have a few questions though...
Will it cut through ply wood (and what sizes)? What is largest size it can cut? About how much did it cost (including motors, and controller)? Where did you get the components?
Hi Tom!. Congratulations for your machine!. I`d like to ask you if your machine can be used to make PCB boards or it`s only for milling stuff. Thanks Have a great week! Kilo
Hy can you give me the instructions from where you buy the components?? and the most important for me from where can I buy the BOARD??? Thanks for your support and collaboration rudolf
any shopping list with links? maybe an assembly manual of sorts for the card and motors. then maybe a initial setup tutorial? Like zero'ing the bit, and work area. any preassembled kits (electrically) for sale?
Hi, I have a question: Do you know the dimensions of the usable area of the McWire Cartesian Bot 1.2 on the RepRap website? Just curious. I'm going to build a Rep(St)Rap.
what are you guys using for steppers as far a .oz of torque? i was looking at nema17 in the 45-75oz ratings, is this sufficient for the z axis for what this machine was designed for? for a motor i will be using either one of the dremels, possibly one of the harbor freight "equivalents" or the shaft driven setup. also, can anybody recommend a cheap driver/breakout board setup that definitely works w/ mach 3? i have been out of electronics for quite some time, probably 10yrs or so, so a kit would be nice and i don't have access to the equipment used to make my own boards anymore. i can read schematics and know orientation and kind of remember the resistor color code, but i am rusty and i also don't want to have to buy a large quantity when i need just a few items. should i go for 5V, 12V or 24V motors? this will be used for education as i am learning solidworks but really need to learn the cam aspect and figure this would do the trick as i am not into the virtual cnc machines, i want to see a finished product. what have you guys figured the decent setup size is? i was thinking something maybe a bit smaller in size compared to the McWire Cartesian Bot v1.2 but a bit larger than this one. thanks in advance, bob
Could the Professor (on Gilligan's island) have made a simpler one ?! Hahahaha... Nice work Tom! I've already started buying/sourcing the parts to make my own.
It depends on if your making the pcb yourself. If you are than you will need to wire in extra traces from the parallel port. The CAD software determines what pins are used for the limit switches. Just hook up all the NO switchs to the limit switch pin and a power pin from the port. They can all be connected together because it doesn't matter which axis goes over the limit, just that the cnc did exceed the bounds. So just make a trace from a power pin and the pin defined by the software to a screw terminal. Connect all the wires that go to the normally open limit switches to the terminals and voilla
Hi grate site, I was trying to work out if this Driver circuits is for a Bipolar Stepper Motor or a Unipolar Stepper Motor, you may of said and I've mist it Thank for any help -Mark-
Hello ... I'm from Iraq ... that this great work.. I'am very impressed by your work .. it is the competence of high .. It encouraged me to work on the machine .. But I can not find Chip cd4028 or Equivalent to it in Iraqi market of electronic . and There is no import of this chip because of some alleged that he entered in the manufacture of explosives by remote control. I did not find equivalent in my data ship. Is there an alternative or there is another way For canceling it ????. Please .. Including to me and the methods used. And accept my sincere thanks and appreciation .... Sorry,of my English is weak .. Thanks
Ok, i finished my pcb and soldered all the parts on it. is this the way to connect the motors? (the circle with the X in it is the light bulb) i only want to be sure that those blue marked soldering points are nothing important i might have forgtotten. now i need to know what kind of bulbs to use an what voltage you recommend. on my motor it says 4.0V/Phase... does that mean i need a voltage of 16v?
Hi, i am currently designing a desktop CNC machine and i am having trouble finding a suitable stepper within my price range, could you tell me where to source the components and the circuit board? Could you build a stepper board that i could buy from you? thanks, Sam
hi there loved the cnc, always wanted one and now I can and I was wondering if the stepper motor controller you made up can it be used as a 6 axis controller as I would like to add to the cnc later on
Hi Tom, I'm building a mill myself, but was unable to find a cd4516 ic at my local electronics store. So i bought the closest part i could find which is a 74ls169. I was able to breadboard a single motor circuit using this ic. I'm wondering if you have any thoughts about using this part as an alternative. Also what program you used to make the schematic and if you could send me a copy so i can edit this ic into the schematic. Thanks.
Hi tom can you directly control motors from circuit w/switches, if so where would I put them? THANKS TOM Great site and info, this is first circuit I've built just need to test and connect, add few bolts. will send pictures of mill when I get motors connected.
Thanks for the vids . I'm building a table top mill and you have definitely inspired me. being a newbie this is my first build. The X and Y tables are done and next is the Z and circuitry. when I get to a point I'll put my vids up to share with other people , and maybe this will help in there builds. Mike
Tom, terrific stuff! I was looking for a really simple CNC to play around with before building a bigger toy. I'm off to the hardware store right now! Regards Geoff
Hello, and welcome to Instructables! I have realized that you did not receive a greeting from ewilhelm (Eric) or the Instructables Robot, so here you go! I do NOT work for Instructables, but I give out greetings once in a while.
Welcome, and just have fun at Instructables.
If you have any questions, you can contact the Instructables staff. If you do not know who they are, you can check them out here. Just click on one of the accounts at the link I just gave you (somebody in the Instructables Team/ Interns/ Advisors) and ask them in a private message or comment.
Hello GorillazMiko and thanks for the greeting. I struggled a bit with putting this instructable together but I guess it payed off. I've had over 100K views and 300+ comments almost all of them positive. It is a well managed site. I would like to ask why it takes so long for the pages to load but I guess it hasn't been a big problem. Thanks Tom
Dang, nice job, my Instructables don't even have up to 5k views on them. And the pages loading slow problem... it's probably your internet connection, mine is fine.
