  • How to Make a Pure Black Photography Background!

The secret of pure white backgrounds is all down to exposure control. You need to light the background with a different light source that the main light source that is directed to your subject. This is commonly achieved by using a secondary flash head, usually positioned behind the subject (or its support) directed at the background. You can buy flash heads very cheaply and get an optical trigger from most photographic suppliers. You need to set the flash head so that it over exposes the background to achieve pure white. You will need to find a balance between the exposure of the subject and the background. So for example, if the subject is correctly exposed and the background is to dark (becoming grey) the secondary flash needs increasing compared with the primary or subject flash. So for example, if the subject is correctly exposed and the background is to dark (becoming grey) the secondary flash needs increasing compared with the primary or subject flash. One method is to move the primary flash further away from the subject. By the way, you can also use a mid-grey background and change its colour using coloured gels over a secondary flash. You can also make it appear pure white as I have described above. Hope this helps.

  • How to repair a flat mountain bike tire with disc brakes

Also, avoid punctures in the first place by improving your riding technique. Don't rely of your bike's suspension to absorb impacts on rocks, kerbs etc. Stand up on the pedals and let your knees and ankles act as suspension units. This reduces punishment on the tyres, tubes and wheels. I have an anti-puncture fluid in my tubes that automatically seals punctures as soon as they happen. Another point is to place a piece of 2mm sheet metal or plastic (about 1 inch by 2) between the disc brake pads to stop them popping out if you accidentally operate the brake lever.

Why did you not do all of the metal working, cutting, grinding and polishing before hardening the blade? Also, having annealed the blade, would it not be easier to use a jig saw to cut out the profile?

    DIY: Water Drinking Schedule

The human body has a wonderful mechanism for scheduling when to drink. It's been evolved over millions of years and helped our ancestors survive and thus prolong our species. So what is this wonderful mechanism? It's called "thirst" and it tells you when you need to drink. All of this bunkum about hydrating is based on a scientific report by an American scientist who reported after his research that "the average human adult needs to consume 2.5 litres of water per day". What the bottled water industry fail to mention is what he said next: "...and most of that is contained in the food that we eat". Drinking bottled water from plastic bottles is unnecessary but also very bad for the environment and for sea life as much of the waste plastic ends up in the sea and poisons sea life. STOP BUYING BOTTLED WATER. It's a total confidence trick. If you must "hydrate" drink tap water.

    Magnetic connectors for batteries

The best thing about Instructables is the number of ideas different projects give me for other applications. This is a classic example. I'm not sure of the merits of this idea but I can see useful applications.

Tie Any Cord in 30 Seconds!

I use an alternative, simpler and quicker method. Fold the cable into a loop half the size of the cable. Fold the loop in half again and repeat until the loops are about 9 inches long then tie the bunch of loops in a simple, loose overhand knot. It takes longer to describe that to do and can be done with long heavy cables. It also makes it much easier to straighten for use.
