You can achieve the same ends by rolling the egg on a counter with gentle pressure. Makes a million tiny cracks and the shell slips off easily; plus, there's no additional jar or shaking needed.
While it would be insightly, I've read that gluing egg cartons will muffle noise and basically soundproof a room. Sounds like an extra layer of sheetrock would be necessary over the cartons for aesthetics.
