    How To Get "Free" Eggs

Very enjoyable article. Your sense of humor has allowed your chickens to live another day i'm thinking. Some birds need to be put into their housing near the end of the day, and closed in. Especially if they have a lot of room to roam. My chickens aren't just free range - they're anarchy chickens - and they have acres to play in and eat grass and yes, goat and hog poop. (they clean the parasites out and reduce fly eggs and hatches - excellent job girls) Roosters should have at least 8 hens or they are going to become very raw and bedraggled on their backs as the (ehhhemmmrmmmhummm) is not gentle at all. And they may crow at 3 AM. If you have enough hens and a choice of roosters i recommend using the less aggressive rooster for breeding. They are nicer birds, and warn the girls about hawk...see more »Very enjoyable article. They are nicer birds, and warn the girls about hawks, check out the food scraps you throw in and call the girls over when it is okay, and generally are overseers and protectors of the flock. The "free" part is STARTING to happen - after 3 years, AND finally starting to get broody hens that SUCCESSFULLY raise chicks. We have Black Jersey Giants - and had 8 girls get broody. THAT cuts down on egg production! i was getting $4 per dozen, but the people insisted on $5/dozen. They state these eggs are WAY better than the freshest, "organic, free range" eggs they can get from the big organic producers one county over. And i live in a poor county. As a result, they now pay for their own ORGANIC crumbles and ORGANIC scratch. The organic is one reason i can get such a price here - and if i were stupid enough to poison the property with ag chemicals i could also only get about $3/dozen...

Make your own charcoal at home (Video)

Charcoal supposedly needs more air to reach heat, but has less impurities than coal does. The best coal would be anthracite instead of bituminous. When you heat the coal the impurities melt and form clinkers in the throat, the coal turns into coke....

  • Making and deploying a check valve for a hydroponics multi-tier flood-and-drain rig

Thanks. i've only had the mechanical type of timers before and was thinking i need one that can do multiple cycles/day...Looks like the ticket. Makes you wonder why your local hdwe store doesn't carry something like this, which would be more functional, no?

  • Making and deploying a check valve for a hydroponics multi-tier flood-and-drain rig

Nice, creative, functional. i'd like to upsize for greater production - don't want to go farmer's market size, but enough to grow a lot of food. Actually, come to think of it - i COULD increase the size and grow fresh fodder in the greenhouse to supplement the hogs, chickens and maybe the goats too....Curious as to how you time your pump/drain cycles... i'd have to head to solar power and need low voltage things, but i could likely convert that sort of hardware myself...Thanks

  • Make an all purpose organic pesticide from vegetables

How does it do on cucumber beetles? Any idea? We usually use neem oil and ECOS dish soap (or 7th generation - one of the not petrochemical types like Dawn or Joy or that toxic garbage) Since neem is anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, and anti-viral we use it for black rot on the roses, some fungus on the hollyhocks, aphids, and more. It is always nice to change up on the buggers though - because using ANY poison GUARANTEES they eventually develop resistance to it. GMOs, commercial pesticides, weed killers, etc - doesn't matter - bugs and weeds WILL develop resistance - which is why we use over 4,000 X more poison than at WWII and we have a 400X greater bug/weed/pest problem than at that time....

Sun & bug lotion: one simple solution

No moisturizers, shower gels etc. My soaps are all vegetable based because the US Govt in it's infinite lack of wisdom removed all animal fat soaps from the market - secretly (see the headlines?) because of MAD COW DISEASE possibilities. Of course we know that mad cow (bovine spongiform encephalopathy) ONLY happens to cows that are fed ANIMAL parts and are exposed to some toxic ag chemicals. So it would be unnecessary in a sane world, but our govt is insane.Ozone? Everyone is probably short. Ozone in nature - the only real stuff - is O3 - not the chemical breakdown that is called pollution. That is off other breakdowns. Ozone can be dangerous above some levels, true, but not in nature. The UV comes through in i think the 200 - 400 nanometer range, splits the O2 we breathe into 2 O(1) atoms - and they bond with another O2 molecule, forming O3. It is supposed to be the blue in the sky, is heavier than air, and sinks - where it will kill any fungi, bacteria, or virus if delivered correctly and in the correct dosage. In sane nations - it is used to kill cancers and infections.i ranch/farm on a little place in N Calif - so i'm out in the sun all the time. Seems i can't be setting fence until it gets over 110 degrees - unfortunately, that is literally true... That should make D3. As for Zika - don't worry and for God's sake (and more for yours) DON'T get any Zika vaccines!!! Vaccination as presented is medical retardation - and Zika is just drug pushers faking a danger to get YOUR tax money (how many billions for the developed vax?) from you for them. Rockefeller Foundation (evil, evil people) patented the Zika virus in 47. In it's entire and well known history it has NEVER caused microcephaly. In Columbia last year it was proven to have hit 5,000 people. ZERO microcephaly or neurological cases in there. On the OTHER hand - the area in Brazil where this is happening has a combination of toxic Ag poisons AND MANDATORY DTaP VACCINATION OF PREGNANT WOMEN and the DTaP and TDaP vaccines have a history of neurological damages which inclued rare microcephaly cases but tend to be dominated by spasming, failure to thrive, delayed mental development, etc. when newborns and in-utero infants are involved. The Zika threat is total hype - and the cases in this country WERE IMPORTED to scare you. Brought in from Haiti and elsewhere. Zika makes a mild flu-like fever generally....
