I also replace batteries in a similar way, using a barrel connector in the battery compartment lid, wired to each side of the terminals in the compartment. This way one power adapter powers many of my devices.
Wonderful instructable! Also, A barrel connector in the dowel sticking out a hole in the compartment lid.

I've played around with these, I was going to use them to cool a bait well. It just used too much of the boats battery power.

I think this is one of the nicest designs for a small DIY light I have seen. The enclosure and light cover is really well done. On/Off simplicity! Rechargable, functional and wireless, you have set the standard.
Take a look at this site, ElectroDacus. It's a solar controller for lithium batteries, I got one and am really happy with it. There are several youtube videos on the use and capabilities.
